Can anyone join? - Yes. The pipe band is open to any student, faculty or staff member and member of the community. Community members should contact the director with interest.
How do I start? - If you are beginner you'll start on a practice version of the bagpipes - a practice chanter, shown below - and spend about a semester getting to know your way around the instrument before you advance to a full set of bagpipes.
What is the cost? - For students, bagpipes lessons can be taken for credit and are part of tuition expenses. Non-students may register with the community music school for instruction. Beginners will need to buy their own practice chanter and eventually a few uniform parts, but these items are not cost prohibitive. If you're a student and not sure if you can afford your own set of pipes, the band has some loaner sets to offer.
What does the band do? - The band represents the university at various functions such as commencement exercises and luncheons. The band performs at concerts and participates in regional competitions. Aside from this we have a good time and work hard to make the best music we can.
