EDINBORO, PA - Edinboro took advantage of several East Stroudsburg miscues to post a 20-9 victory in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game. The contest was the final game for both teams, with Edinboro concluding Lou Tepper s first season as head coach at 5-6. The Fighting Scots ended the season with three straight wins, the first three-game winning streak since the final three games of the 1996 campaign. East Stroudsburg finishes at 6-5.
Edinboro opened the scoring with its longest drive of the day, marching 52 yards before sophomore Sean McNicholas (Kirtland, OH/Kirtland) kicked a 22-yard field goal. The Warriors fumbled the ensuing kickoff, with Thomas Wallace (Pittsburgh, PA/Wilkinsburg) recovering and returning it to the ESU 29. Edinboro lost yardage on the drive, but McNicholas came in and booted a 53-yard field goal. The kick is an Edinboro school-record and the second-longest in PSAC history, bettered only by West Chester s Eric Wentling, who kicked a 55-yarder in 1983.
The Fighting Scots went up 13-0 with 5:13 to play in the second quarter on Bernard Henry s (Wadesboro, NC/Anson) one-yard plunge. The score was set up by a bad punt snap, with David Holton (Altoona, PA/Altoona) tackling ESU punter Adam Hostetter at the Warrior 23.
East Stroudsburg answered with an 8-play, 76-yard march, culminated by A.J. Oliveri s one-yard TD run. Chris Wiggins (Solon, OH/Solon) blocked the Mike Berry s extra point attempt. The Warriors closed the gap to 13-9 at halftime on Berry s 38-yard field goal as time expired.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Edinboro scored an insurance touchdown thanks to another East Stroudsburg mistake. Chris Kane (Round Rock, TX/Ramstein American) recovered a fumbled punt at the ESU 25. It took the Fighting Scots eight plays to cover the distance, with Alonzo Roebuck (Pittsburgh, PA/Northgate) going in from a yard out with 3:43 to play.
Edinboro finished with 246 total yards, while East Stroudsburg totaled 238 yards. Henry gained 76 yards on 18 rushes, finishing the season with 1,054 yards. He becomes just the fourth Edinboro rusher to rush for 1,000 yards more than once. The senior ran for 1,046 yards a year ago. Jack Davis (Cleveland, OH/Villa Angela St. Joseph) completed 15 of 28 passes for 129 yards, with Stephane Lubin (Brampton, ONT/Brampton Centennial) hauling in 5 passes for 54 yards.
East Stroudsburg junior tailback Andre Castiglioni finished with 115 yards on 21 carries to break the school season rushing record. Castiglioni's 1,160 yards betters the previous mark of 1,109 yards set by Stewart Ford. Geoff Brobst completed 12 of 25 passes for 132 yards despite numerous dropped balls. John Kotarsky led the way with 6 catches for 76 yards.
