EDINBORO OFFENSE EXPLODES IN 42-27 WIN OVER SHIPPENSBURG

Davis Throws For Three Scores As Fighting Scots Win Second Straight Game

EDINBORO, PA - Sophomore quarterback Jack Davis (Cleveland, OH/Villa Angela St. Joseph) threw three touchdown passes and Bernard Henry (Wadesboro, NC/Anson) ran for two more scores to lead Edinboro to a 42-27 win over Shippensburg in a PSAC West contest. Both teams are nor 4-6 overall and 2-4 in conference action.

The Fighting Scots had scored just 16 points in their last three games and had thrown for just one touchdown all year. But after falling behind 14-7 early in the second quarter, Edinboro ran off 28 straight points to post its second straight victory.

The scoring spree began when Davis hooked up with red-shirt freshman Javar Manning (Meadville, PA/Meadville) on a 30-yard aerial, the first career touchdown for Manning. The score was set up by David Holton s (Altoona, PA/Altoona) blocked punt, with Edinboro recovering at the Ship 25. Edinboro took the lead for good with only 19 seconds remaining in the half as Davis found Stephane Lubin (Brampton, ONT/Brampton Centennial) for a 16-yard touchdown to cap a 12-play, 66-yard drive.

Davis third touchdown pass accounted for the lone points in the third quarter, with Chris Buehner (Hopwood, PA/Laurel Highlands) on the receiving end of a 23-yard scoring pass. Edinboro made it 35-14 with 13:12 to play on Henry s 2-yard run, culminating an 11-play, 62-yard drive. It marked his second touchdown of the day. He also accounted for the Scots first score with a 6-yard run at the end of the first quarter. The senior tailback finished the day as the leading rusher with 96 yards on 16 carries.

Shippensburg answered with a quick score, Chris Gicking finding Melvin Scott for a 19-yard touchdown less than two minutes later. But the Scots answered with a 4-yard scoring run by John Williams (Millgrove, ONT/Waterdown) with 4:43 to play. Gicking and Scott completed the scoring with a 23-yard pass with 42 seconds left.

Shippensburg grabbed a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 3-yard run by Michael Phillips, the extra point going wide left. Henry s first TD run gave Edinboro a 7-6 advantage, but the Red Raiders regained the lead when Marty Brown fell on Phillips fumble in the end zone. Gicking s two-point conversion pass was good to Brown.

After failing to gain 200 total yards in each of its last three games, Edinboro gained 368 yards with a balanced attack, rushing for 204 yards and passing for 164. The 368 yards was the second-highest total all year. Davis completed 13 of 21 passes for 164 yards, with Lubin hauling in 5 balls for 68 yards. Alonzo Roebuck (Pittsburgh, PA/Northgate) supported Henry with 53 yards rushing on 7 totes, while Williams had 37 on 6 carries.

Shippensburg gained 348 total yards, but almost half of it came in the final quarter. Gicking, the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year last season, completed 17 of 32 passes for 208 yards. Scott caught 8 passes for 114 yards, while Dave Brown hauled in 4 passes for 68 yards and led the Red Raiders with 58 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Edinboro concludes its first season under head coach Lou Tepper next Saturday, hosting East Stroudsburg in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
