EDINBORO, PA - Edinboro University 197-pound starter David Shunamon (Tewksbury, MA/ Tewksbury) earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Month honors for his performance at the first two tournaments of the 2000-01 season.
At 7-0 this season, Shunamon has already claimed championships at the Oklahoma Classic and Slippery Rock Open. Starting the season unranked, the redshirt sophomore climbed to 13th in the nation after posting victories over nationally-ranked wrestlers en route to the Oklahoma Classic title. He upset tenth-ranked Waymon May of Oklahoma by a 5-1 score in the semifinals, and then upended Bloomsburg's Todd Hockenbroch, the 14th-ranked grappler, by a 5-2 score in the finals.
Shunamon immediately proved he was up to the task of filling the shoes of departed two-time EWL champion A.J. Johnson with his victory over Hockenbroch, the PSAC champion in 2000. Hockenbroch defeated Johnson for the PSAC title, but later lost the rematch in the EWL finals.
Shunamon pinned Ben Kuntz of Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the Slippery Rock Open, before scoring a 13-4 major decision over Gannon's Doug Joseph, the eighth-ranked wrestler in Division II. He downed Eric Mausser of Clarion by an 8-4 score in the finals.
Shunamon continues to face top competition this weekend at the Las Vegas Invitational. In his weight class, returning national champion Brad Vering of Nebraska leads the list of top wrestlers. Vering is 3-0 this season, after last year's 38-3 performance. All-Americans Nick Preston of Ohio State, ranked third, and fourth-ranked Pat Quirk of Illinois also highlight the weight class.
Shunamon redshirted a year ago, posting a 20-5 record in open tournaments. As a true freshman he placed fifth at the PSAC Championships, registering a 16-22 record. He was a Massachusetts state champion and two-time New England champion at 189 lbs. as a prepster at Tewksbury High School.
