EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University wrestling team knocked Clarion from the ranks of the unbeaten on Friday night, handing the Golden Eagles their first Eastern Wrestling League loss by a 26-9 score. Edinboro improves to 8-3-1 overall with its second win in two nights, and is 3-0-1 in EWL action. Clarion falls to 3-1 in the EWL and 8-2 overall. Edinboro, ranked 11th by InterMat and 16th by the NWCA, has not lost to an EWL opponent in its last 19 dual matches. Only a 16-16 tie to Virginia Tech earlier this year mars the record at 18-0-1.
The Fighting Scots took control of the match with dominating performances by Ben Boozer (Cochranton, PA/ Cochranton) and Josh Koscheck (Waynesburg, PA/Waynesburg) at 174 and 184 lbs., respectively. After 18th-ranked Yanni Diamond (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) picked up a 6-1 win over Peter Krofshefskie at 165 lbs. to give Edinboro a 12-6 lead, Boozer followed with an impressive technical fall triumph over Aaron Mitchell at 174 lbs. Boozer improved to 11-0 while wrestling at 174 lbs. for the second straight night. He scored an early first period takedown, then piled up three back points on three separate occasions in the first period for an 11-0 lead. Boozer came up with another takedown in the second period, then was awarded three riding points at the end of the perfod to boost his lead to 16-0.
Koscheck, the top-ranked wrestler at 174 lbs., moved up a weight class for the second straight night and proceeded to flatten Clarion's Bob Topper at 2:37. Koscheck remains perfect at 31-0 with his 10th fall of the season. Both wrestlers were crowned champions in last weekend's PSAC Championships, Koscheck named the Outstanding Wrestler while winning at 174 lbs., and Topper capturing the 184 lb. crown.
Ahead 23-6 following the two victories, David Shunamon (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury) boosted the lead to 26-6, rallying for a 7-6 win over Eric Mausser at 197 lbs. Mausser, who is now 21-7, held a 3-0 lead early in the second period. Shunamon scored a pair of escapes and a takedown for a 4-3 lead early in the final period, with mausser knotting it at 4-4 with an escape. A Shunamon takedown and Mausser's reversal with just four seconds left made it 6-6, but Shunamon won, 7-6, by virtue of 1:05 in riding time. Shunamon improves to 25-3 and is ranked 16th.
The final match of the night pitted a pair of nationally-ranked heavyweights in 10th-ranked John Testa of Clarion and Edinboro's Josh Pearce (Greenville, PA/Commodore Perry), who is 15th. Following a scoreless first period, testa scored an escape and a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Pearce came up with two escapes, but Testa's takedown with 52 seconds left in the third gave him a 5-2 advantage. Pearce countered with an escape four seconds later, but it wasn't enough to avert a 5-3 loss. Pearce falls to 18-7, three of the losses to Testa, while the Clarion sophomore is now 22-4.
The night began with a mild upset as Edinboro freshman Jacob Gray (Essex, VT/Essex) posted a 3-0 shutout of Clarion's Peter Derstine at 125 lbs. All of the scoring took place in the third period, with Gray registering a reversal at 1:57, then using 3:51 of riding time for a 3-0 win. He improves to 12-15.
Tenth-ranked Rad Martinez posted his second close decision over the Boro's Charlie Soto (El Paso, TX/J.,M. Hanks) in the last week, prevailing 4-2 at 133 lbs.. Martinez bested Soto, 4-3, in last weekend's PSAC semifinals. Soto is now 8-14, while Martinez improves to 24-5.
Fighting Scot Chad Caros (Franklinville, NY/Suffern) held on for a 7-4 win over Frank Edgar at 141 lbs., boosting his record to 10-7. Caros assumed a 5-0 lead midway through the second period, only to see Edgar close within 6-4 in the final period.
Ryan Shapert (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) was an 8-0 winner over Clarion's Dominic Surra in the PSAC's, but this time the 12th-ranked Shapert needed overtime to post a 3-1 win at 149 lbs. Tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, Shapert's takedown with 26 seconds left in the overtime period helped him improve to 20-7.
At 157 lbs., Shane McChesney, from nearby Corry High School, was a 4-3 win over Josh Evans (Marietta, GA/ McEachern). That match had closed the gap to 9-6 before Edinboro won the next four matches.
