CLEVELAND, OH - While their teammates were battling Lock Haven for the PSAC Championships on Saturday, January 27, former Cochranton High School standout Ben Boozer (Cochranton, PA/ Cochranton) and redshirt freshman Matt King (Connellsville, PA/ Connellsville) were squaring off in the finals of the 165-pound weight class at the Cleveland State Open in Cleveland, OH.
Boozer bested King by a 4-0 score in the finals, capturing his second tournament championship this season. He also owns a trophy from the Slippery Rock Open in November. Boozer, a two-time NCAA qualifier, shut out Central Michigan's Joe Weakley by a 7-0 count. He pinned Lehigh's Greg Chirieleison in the quarterfinals in 3:43, then scored a 13-4 major decision against Mark Lazzo of Michigan in the semifinals. Boozer improved to 9-0 this season and is 65-28 in his career.
King defeated Arsen Aleksanyan, 6-4, of Michigan State in his first match, then shut out Ashland's Ryan Aldrich by a 7-0 score. In the semifinals, King downed Michigan State's Alec Kowaewski in a 12-5 decision to advance to face Boozer. King has a 20-6 record.
Freshman Ryan Yates (Lower Burrell, PA/Burrell) finished in fourth place at 157 pounds, losing to Central Michigan's Dave Bolyard in the consolation final by a 9-0 score. After a 10-4 first round win over Josh Reed of Central Michigan, Yates suffered a 5-3 overtime loss to Michigan's Ryan Bertin. He won five straight matches in the consolation bracket, including a 6-4 decision over teammate Nate Yetzer (Mansfield, OH/ Mansfield Madison). Yates improved to 16-7 with his performance.
Yetzer won three matches to improve his record to 9-7. He posted a 20-6 major decision over Pitt's Rich Boden in the first round, downed Sal Monachino of Kent State, 5-1, and pinned Findlay's Waylon Lowe in 3:07. Purdue's Clouis Crane sent Yetzer to the consolation bracket with an 8-1 victory.
Nate s brother Josh Yetzer (Mansfield, OH/Mansfield Madison) competed at 149 pounds, winning two matches. He scored an 11-3 major decision over Eastern Michigan's Keon Suggs and shut out John Carroll's Randy Bosley, 5-0. A 10-6 loss to Penn State's Adam Shepler in the consolation bracket eliminated Yetzer.
Heavyweight Reuben Daniels (Summerville, SC/Summerville) won four matches at the Open, upping his record to 8-9. He won decisions against Lehigh's John Hyde (2-1), Findlay's Jed Failor (7-2), and Penn'State s Adrian Rivera, 1-1, after failing to escape in the overtime tiebreaker session. His losses came to Aaron Walter of Michigan, 3-2, and Indiana's Ryan McCain by a 6-3 score.
Freshman Chris Bala (Darien, NY/Alexander Central) defeated Indiana's Josh Beals, 10-4, at 149 pounds to improve to 3-7. He also claimed a 3-2 victory over Mark Lybarger, who wrestled unattached. He lost to Jason Bader of Indiana, 4-3, and Jame Mangan of Purdue by fall at 1:27.
Josh Evans (Marietta, GA/McEachern) added two victories to his season record, which stands at 3-7. He scored a 7-2 decision over Cleveland State's James Greenwood and an 11-6 win over Ryan Ficco of John Carroll. In the opening round, he suffered a fall at the hands of West Virginia's Mike Torrier in 3:45. A 2-1 loss to Joe Charlton of Kent eliminated Evans.
Freshman Matt Camino (Solon, OH/Solon) and Ryan Smith (McKean, PA/General McLane) also competed but came away winless at the event.
The Fighting Scots host a pair of dual matches on Thursday and Friday, February 1 and 2. Edinboro and Gannon face off on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, Eastern Wrestling League rival Clarion invades McComb Fieldhouse for a 7:30 p.m. dual match.
