Fighting Scots Claim 16th-Straight EWL Victory

EDINBORO, PA - With the match even at nine points apiece, the Fighting Scots captured the last six matches to extend their Eastern Wrestling League win streak to 16 straight with a 32-9 victory over Cleveland State.

Edinboro, ranked 11th by InterMat and 12th by the NWCA, improved to 1-0, while dropping the Vikings to 1-1 on the season. Head coach Tim Flynn's squads have won 23 of their last 24 dual matches, and the last 11 straight over CSU.

Edinboro led 9-0 following a 10-5 victory for David Shunamon (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury) over Dom Abato and a fall by heavweight Josh Pearce (Greenville, PA/Commodore Perry) over Don Caramell in 4:21.

Shunamon, ranked 11th at 197 pounds, used three takedowns and a reversal to improve to 13-2. Pearce led 7-0 in the second period on a two takedowns and backpoints, then finished the fall in the second period to run his record to 11-4. Pearce, who has five falls this season, is ranked ninth by Amateur Wrestling News. Caramell drops to 3-3, while Abato has a 3-5 record.

Head coach Jack Effner's team knotted the meet with victories at 125 and 133 pounds. Rocco Mansueto improved to 5-2, downing junior Charlie Soto (El Paso, TX/J.M. Hanks) by a 9-2 score. Soto managed just two escapes in the bout to fall to 2-5. Freshman Jacob Gray (Essex, VT/Essex) competed in the first dual match of his career, filling in for the injured Justin Wilcox (Greentownship, OH/Oak Hills). Gray trailed Nick Boucher by a 4-0 score in the second period before Boucher pinned Gray at 3:56. Gray dropped to 8-7, while Boucher improved to 6-2.

Even at nine apiece, junior Chad Caros (Franklinville, NY/Suffern) shut out Ryan Guciardo in a 10-0 major decision at 141 pounds to put his team ahead for good at 13-9. Caros scored a nearfall to lead 5-0 after the first period, then added an escape and takedown in the second for the victory. Caros has a 5-3 record, while Guciardo suffered his first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1.

The Shapert twins, Ryan and Shaun (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) increased Edinboro's lead to 20-9 with a pair of shutout victories. Ryan scored a 9-0 major decision over Anthony Coleman to improve to 9-3 at 149 pounds. Ryan, ranked 14th in the weight class, started slowly with no first period scoring, but after leading 3-0 heading into the third session, came alive with a takedown and a nearfall.

Shaun needed only a takedown and an escape, and with over three minutes of riding time defeated Cleveland State s Jack Effner, 4-0, at 157 pounds. Shaun, an All-American a year ago, has a 12-4 record and is ranked eighth by both InterMat and AWN. Effner, the son of head coach Jack Effner, dropped to 4-5.

At 165 pounds, Yanni Diamond (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) improved to 10-4 with a decision over Aaron Warnock. Diamond used three takedowns and a reversal for the 9-3 win. Warnock is 1-5.

Two-time All-American Josh Koscheck (Waynesburg, PA/Waynesburg) made quick work of Joe Phillips at 174 pounds, scoring seven points in the first 45 seconds before pinning the Viking at 1:18. Ranked second by InterMat and AWN after last season's runner-up finish at the NCAA Tournament, the redshirt junior is off to a 16-0 start with a team-leading seven falls.

Freshman Justin Millard (Wyalusing, PA/Wyalusing) won an 8-2 decision in his first dual match of his career over Cleveland State's Brian Hasenohrl at 184 pounds. Millard is 10-5 in his first season, while Hasenohrl has a 3-5 ledger.

he Fighting Scots next travel to Blacksburg, VA on Saturday, December 9 for a 6:00 p.m. tilt with EWL rival Virginia Tech.
