SIX FIGHTING SCOTS FEATURED IN NATIONAL RANKINGS

Josh Koscheck Holds Top Spot at 174 Pounds

EDINBORO, PA - InterMat Magazine released its weekly NCAA Division I Wrestling rankings on Wednesday, featuring six Fighting Scots among the top 20 of their respective weight classes.

In addition, Edinboro climbed to 10th-place following last week s 2-0 dual match record. The Fighting Scots blasted local foe Gannon by a 32-6 score on Thursday, then improved to 3-0-1 in the Eastern Wrestling League with a 26-9 victory over Clarion Friday evening. Edinboro is 8-3-1 overall.

Minnesota leads the list, with Oklahoma State, Iowa, Iowa State, and Michigan rounding out the top five. Oklahoma, Illinois, Lehigh, and Ohio State lead Edinboro in the next five. Eastern Wrestling League opponent Lock Haven (11th) also earned a spot on the rankings.

Returning NCAA runner-up Josh Koscheck (Waynesburg, PA/Waynesburg) retained the top spot at 174 pounds. He is a perfect 31-0 and has won 40 of his last 41 matches. In his last two matches, he scored a 22-7 technical fall against Gannon's Dave Spinelli and a fall over PSAC champion Bob Topper of Clarionin 2:37, all while competing up a weight at 184 lbs. Koscheck solidified his spot at the top of the rankings last Monday, January 29, when he captured a 6-1 victory over former top-ranked Otto Olson of Michigan at the NWCA All-Star Classic.

Senior twins Ryan and Shaun Shapert (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) each earned the 12th spot in their respective weight classes. Ryan is 19-7 after a pair of dual match victories last week at 149 pounds. He pinned Gannon's Brad Manfredonia in 1:23 and scored a takedown in overtime to upend Dominic Surra of Clarion, 3-1. Shaun is ranked 12th at 157 pounds, retaining the spot after missing the last two dual matches due to a skin infection. Each grappler was a runner-up at the PSAC Tournament. Ryan lost to ninth-ranked Jamarr Billman of Lock Haven by a 9-8 score, while Shaun suffered a 9-3 loss to eighth-ranked Ed Hockenberry of Bloomsburg.

Redshirt sophomore Dave Shunamon (Tewskbury, MA/Tewksbury) has an impressive 25-3 record, but has slipped to the 16th position at 197 pounds. He suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in the finals of the PSAC Tournament when Lock Haven's Avery Zerkle scored an escape in the tiebreaker session. He has won his last two matches, downing Gannon's Doug Joseph, 4-2, and Clarion's Eric Mausser, 7-6. Shunamon captured the gold medal at the Oklahoma Classic and Slippery Rock Open, and finished in seventh place at the Las Vegas Invitational.

National qualifier Josh Pearce (Greenville, PA/Commodore Perry) holds down the 15th spot at heavyweight. Pearce is 18-7, but has lost his last three matches. He lost to Clarion's tenth-ranked John Testa by a 3-1 score in the PSAC finals, and then dropped a 5-3 decision to top-ranked Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State the following night at the NWCA All-Star Classic. In the Clarion dual, he met Testa for the third time this season, losing by a 5-3 score.

Senior Yanni Diamond (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) continues to occupy the 18th spot at 165 pounds. After a narrow 2-1 loss in the finals of the PSAC Tournament to 17th-ranked Doug Cieleski of Slippery Rock, he bounced back with two dual match victories last week. He defeated Lantz Schwabenbauer of Gannon, ranked fourth in Division II, by a 4-1 count. Against Clarion, he scored a 6-1 decision over Pete Kroshefskie. Diamond has a 17-9 season mark.

The Fighting Scots host PSAC Champion Lock Haven on Friday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m. Then on Wednesday, February 14, EWL rival Pittsburgh comes to McComb Fieldhouse for a Valentine's Day date with Edinboro at 7:30 p.m.
