EDINBORO, PA - More than just a conference win will be on the line when the Edinboro University women's soccer team travels to Bloomsburg for a key PSAC matchup at noon on Sunday, September 14.
Since head coach Gary Kagiavas started the soccer program in 1996, his squads have fought hard in each match trying to earn the respect of their more established counterparts. Steadily improving each season, the Fighting Scots took a huge leap a year ago by posting consecutive upsets over nationally ranked opponents, including Sunday's foe Bloomsburg.
Bloomsburg had Edinboro's number before last season, winning all three matches by a combined score of 21-1. The Scots gained a bit of revenge in last year's contest, upsetting the 14th-ranked Huskies by a 3-2 score. The victory ended a three-match losing streak, and started an unbeaten streak that lasted five contests, including a 2-1 victory over 12th-ranked Slippery Rock in the next match.
The Scots look to extend their winning streak to two straight over the Huskies, and two straight for the season after evening their record at 3-3-0 with a 4-0 shutout of California (PA) last Thursday. The win improved their conference mark to 2-1-0, good for second place behind 2-0-0 Bloomsburg. The Scots are ranked 10th in the Northeast Region. The Huskies are 4-0-0 on the season, poised in the second spot in the Northeast Region.
On Wednesday evening, Kagiavas' squad posted its third shutout of the year, and second in PSAC action, in the 4-0 win over Cal. Leading scorer Amy Hazen (Erie, PA/Iroquois) netted her fourth goal of the season to start the Edinboro attack in the first half. Sophomore Andrea Linfield (Etobicoke, ONT/Richview C.I.) aided the Hazen score with her second assist of the season.
The Fighting Scots closed the first half with a flurry, scoring three goals within a two-minute span. At 42:05, McDowell High School graduate Michelle Frick (Erie, PA/McDowell) scored her first goal of the season off of an assist from freshman Lynzie Ellison (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg). In the following two minutes, freshman Stacey Oldenburg (Ft. Washington, MD/Bishop McNamara) netted two scores, her second and third of the season, to give the Fighting Scots an insurmountable 4-0 halftime lead. Junior Amy Lindsey (Allison Park, PA/Hampton) and freshman Angelia Wightman (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) assisted on Oldenburg's goals.
Sophomore keeper Amy Stevens (Burlington, ONT/Nelson) made the halftime lead stand, turning away four Lady Vulcan shots. It marked the first victory and shutout of the season for Stevens, lowering her goals against average to 1.75.
Like Edinboro, Bloomsburg has posted shutout victories over California (PA), 7-0, and Kutztown, 5-0. The Huskies host West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday before Sunday's matchup with the Fighting Scots. Christine Krebs and Alea Balthaser are the leading scorers for head coach Sandy Dickson again this season, netting seven and four goals, respectively. Last season the duo combined for 98 points, scoring 40 goals.
The Scots finally return home on Wednesday, September 27, for their home opener with Indiana (PA). Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
