EDINBORO, PA - For the first time this season, the Edinboro University women's soccer team will play in front of its home crowd when they host Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Indiana (PA) on Wednesday, September 27. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
The Fighting Scots return home for seven straight matches following a season-opening seven game road trip. Head coach Gary Kagiavas' squad faced three nationally-ranked opponents, and four conference foes during the trip. The Fighting Scots lived true to their name, fighting their way to a 3-4-0 record, even in the PSAC at 2-2-0.
The Indians are 2-5-0, 1-1-0 in the PSAC. IUP defeated Shippensburg by a 3-2 score on Saturday, September 23. Shippensburg handed Edinboro one of its two conference losses, a 3-0 shutout on September 10.
Since a 2-1 loss to 20th-ranked Wheeling Jesuit in the season-opener, the Fighting Scots have alternated wins and losses over their next six matches, concluding with a 2-1 overtime defeat to 15th-ranked Bloomsburg in the last contest.
Should the pattern continue, the Scots will avenge a 2-1 loss to the Indians on the road a year ago. IUP holds a 3-1-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools. Edinboro picked up its lone win in 1998, a 2-0 victory at home.
The Edinboro defense has been stellar, allowing only two goals after the half in the first seven matches. The Fighting Scots are outscoring opponents, 14-7, in the first session, and 5-2 after the half.
With the defense controlling its half of the field, the Edinboro offense has done little to disappoint. The strikers are outshooting opponents by a 138-82 margin and hold a 44-21 advantage in corner kicks.
This provides a favorable matchup for Kagiavas' squad. The Indiana offense has been outscored by a 17-6 margin, failing to touch the net in four games this season. The Indians had scored just three goals in their first six matches, equaling that total in their 3-0 victory over Shippensburg.
Leading the defense has been Edinboro's rotating goalie tandem of Denna Iammarino (Solon, OH/Solon) and Amy Stevens (Burlington, ONT/Nelson). The two have combined for 56 saves on 80 shots, three shutouts, and a 1.20 goals against average, while only allowing nine goals.
Junior Amy Hazen (Erie, PA/Iroquois) and sophomore Nicole Vlahovic (Oakville, ONT/ Queen Elizabeth Park) have guided the Edinboro attack, leading the team in goals, shots and points. Each forward has netted four scores, with Vlahovic doubling Hazen's shot attempts, 28-14. Hazen adds three assists, giving her a team-leading 11 points, followed by Vlahovic's nine (4 goals, 1 assist).
The homestand continues on Saturday, September 30 against Westminster. The Homecoming contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
