Fighting Scots Improve to 4-4-0

EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University women's soccer team did not disappoint its first home crowd of the season, downing Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Indiana (PA), 2-1, in the home opener.

The Fighting Scots evened their record at 4-4-0 with the victory, improving their conference mark to 3-2-0. Indiana (PA) dropped to 2-6-0, 1-3-0 in the PSAC.

Edinboro opened the scoring five minutes into the match when Nicole Vlahovic (Oakville, ONT/ Queen Elizabeth Park) netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Junior Amy Hazen (Erie, PA/ Iroquois) received the assist on the score. The goal gives Vlahovic 11 points on the season, second behind Hazen's team-leading 12. It was the fourth time this season the two have hooked up on a scoring opportunity.

The Indians knotted the score at one with 21 minutes remaining in the first half when Jen McMaster redirected Tia Kipp's corner kick past Edinboro keeper Amy Stevens (Burlington, ONT/Nelson). McMaster's goal concluded the first half scoring.

The two teams traded scoring opportunities in the second half, but Stevens and Indiana goalie LaToya Wallace made save after save. With just over ten minutes left in the game, Edinboro forward Sali Frndak (Butler, PA/Knoch) cleared on a breakaway but was tripped inside the goal box by Shelly Dicken. Freshman Stacey Oldenburg (Ft. Washington, MD/Bishop McNamara) took the penalty kick for head coach Gary Kagiavas, beating Wallace into the right corner of the goal for the game-winning score. The goal was Oldenburg's fourth, giving the freshman nine points this season.

The Fighting Scots outshot the Indians by a 23-13 margin and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. It was the second victory over Indiana (PA) for Kagiavas, who has dropped three of five to the conference rival since 1996.

Stevens turned away eight Indian shot attempts in earning her second victory this season. The sophomore lowered her goals against average to 1.60.

The homestand continues on Saturday, September 30 against Westminster. The Homecoming contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
