EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University women s soccer team opens its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference schedule with back-to-back road games this weekend. Edinboro travels to PSAC foe Kutztown for an 11 a.m. kickoff on Saturday, September 9, then plays at Shippensburg on Sunday, September 10, at 12 noon.
Edinboro has started the season on a seven-game road trip, winning one of its first three games, while dropping close matches to a pair of top-20 opponents.
Head coach Gary Kagiavas squad opened the season with a 2-1 loss to 20th-ranked Wheeling Jesuit, but rebounded to blank Salem-Teikyo, 8-0, a day later. Edinboro returned to Erie last Monday to face local rival and ninth-ranked Mercyhurst on the road, losing by a 2-1 score.
Edinboro is now 1-2-0 in the current seven-game road trip, but has outscored opponents 10-4 and has yet to allow a second-half goal. The Boro offense got on track against Salem-Teikyo with six different Fighting Scots finding the net. Sophomores Nicole Vlahovic (Oakville, ONT, Queen Elizabeth Park) and Tania DiFranco (Mayfield Heights, MD/Mayfield) each tallied two goals in the contest and lead the team in points with six and four, respectively.
Kutztown brings a 2-0-1 record into Saturday's matchup following a double-overtime scoreless tie with Philadelphia on Wednesday evening. Junior keeper Joy Wallace made 12 saves and senior back Lori Corcoran led the defense in the shutout.
Shippensburg is undefeated this season, winning its first three contests of the year. The Lady Raiders shut out New York Tech, 5-0, on Wednesday night. Senior Lisa Trombetta earned this week s PSAC Player of the Week honors for her gamewinning goals in Shippensburg s first two games.
Edinboro opened the 1999 PSAC season with a 3-1 victory over Kutztown. The Scots are 2-2 against the Golden Bears, having won the previous two meetings. The Scots won their meeting with Shippensburg by a 6-1 score a year ago. It was Edinboro s first victory over the Lady Raiders, stopping a streak of three straight losses.
The Scots continue the 2000 campaign on Thursday, September 13, playing at PSAC opponent California (PA) at 4 p.m.
