WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM POSTS FIRST-EVER WIN OVER GANNON

Fighting Scots Win Third Straight by Shutout

ERIE, PA - The Edinboro University women's soccer team won its third-straight match by shutout on Tuesday, but more importantly defeated local rival Gannon, 2-0, at Family First Sports Park for the first time in school history.

The Fighting Scots improved to 8-6-1 overall, while the Golden Knights dropped to 7-7-2. Gannon is the fifth-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region, while Edinboro holds the ninth spot in the Northeast Region.

Coach Gary Kagiavas picked up his first win against his alma mater after losing each of the previous four matchups. Each game in the series has always been highly contested, with the last two settled in overtime. A year ago, the two schools battled into double overtime before Erin Cray snapped a scoreless tie 10 minutes into the extra session. The year before, Gannon upended the Fighting Scots, 2-1, in one overtime.

Freshman Lynzie Ellison (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) gave Edinboro the lead, scoring her fourth goal of the season 14:34 into the first half on a penalty kick. It marked the second straight game that Ellison put the Fighting Scots on the board first, scoring the first two goals in the Shepherd match last Sunday.

Edinboro held the slim lead until freshman Angelia Wightman (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) gave her team some breathing room, netting her first goal since taking over the starting spot from injured Amy Hazen (Erie, PA/Iroquois) with less than four minutes remaining in the match. Wightman has three points on two goals and one assist. Junior Sali Frndak (Butler, PA/Knoch) assisted on the play, her team-leading fourth of the season.

Keeper Amy Stevens (Burlington, ONT/Nelson) kept Gannon scoreless for the entire 90 minutes, recording six saves. The sophomore lowered her goals against average to 1.25, while increasing her record to 4-4-0 with her second consecutive shutout. Stevens held PSAC rival Millersville scoreless last Saturday.

Edinboro outshot the Golden Knights by a 16-9 margin, but were on the short end of a 5-1 margin in corner kicks. Gannon keeper Kelena Miller made eight saves before leaving the game with seven minutes left due to injury.

The Fighting Scots continue the season this weekend, traveling to Florida for two matches. Edinboro travels to St. Leo on Friday, October 20 at 2 p.m., then play the University of Tampa at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
