EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University women's soccer team climbed above .500 for the first time this season with a 3-0 shutout of Westminster on Homecoming Saturday in front of their largest crowd of the year.
The Fighting Scots won their second straight match, and first-ever over Westminster, improving their record to 5-4-0. Westminster dropped to 2-6-0 with the loss. Edinboro is now 2-0 on its seven-game home stand, following a 3-4 record over their season-opening seven game road trip.
Former Iroquois High School standout Amy Hazen (Erie, PA/Iroquois) opened the scoring for head coach Gary Kagiavas, netting her fifth goal of the season six minutes into the match. Sophomore Nicole Vlahovic (Oakville, ONT/Queen Elizabeth Park) assisted on the scoring play.
Vlahovic scored the first goal for the Fighting Scots in the second half, putting her team-leading sixth score past Titan keeper Sarah Morrison at the 60-minute mark. Vlahovic now has 12 points on the season, tied for the team lead with Hazen.
The Edinboro defense controlled its half of the field, allowing Westminster only two shots on goal. The Titans were ranked fifth in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 5.0 goals per game. Senior Denna Iammarino (Solon, OH/ Solon) guarded the Edinboro net, making one save in her third shutout of the season, lowering her goals against average to 0.50.
Freshman Angelia Wightman (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) added the third Edinboro score with the first goal of her career with 12 minutes remaining in the match, heading a shot over Morrison off a cross pass from Sali Frndak (Butler, PA/Knoch).
Edinboro outshot Westminster by a 23-2 margin with Morrison making 13 saves in the loss. The Fighting Scots are now 1-1-1 career against the Titans.
The homestand continues for the Edinboro strikers as they return to conference play on Tuesday, October 3 against PSAC rival Slippery Rock. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
