EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University men s and women s swimming teams completed competition in the year 2000 with impressive second-place finishes at the Clarion Mid-Season Invitational this past weekend.
Clarion took top honors in both the men s and women s competitions. Following the Fighting Scot men was Behrend in last place. Mansfield entered the fray in the women s competition to sang third-place with the Behrend women finishing fourth.
Liz DiLoreto (Erie, PA/McDowell) was the top women s performer. The sophomore won the 100 Breaststroke event in 1:09.2, and then followed up with a third-place showing in the 200 Breaststroke.
Amy Reed (Plum, PA/Plum) also took home second-place honors in the 400 IM.
Abby Surdoval (Moon Township, PA/Moon Area) and Melissa Waldorf (Clarence, NY/Clarence) each qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 200 Backstroke. Surdoval finished two seconds ahead of Waldorf in the race after Waldorf out-touched Surdoval by a mere .38 seconds in the 100 yard event. The freshmen duo had previously qualified for the conference championships in the 100 Backstroke.
Sophomore Kent Shrontz (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-MacMillan) was the big story for the Fighting Scot men s team. Shrontz claimed a second-place medal and two third-place finishes over the weekend. His runner-up finish came in the 500 Freestyle (4:54) while he took third in the 200 Freestyle (1:49) and 100 Backstroke (55.51).
The Fighting Scots will take a break from competition until January 13, 2001, when they will travel to Mansfield for a meet with the Mountaineers and Kutztown.
