FIVE FIGHTING SCOT GRIDDERS EARN ALL-PSAC WEST HONORS

Bernard Henry, Dave Smith Repeat as First Team Performers

EDINBORO, PA - A total of five Edinboro University football players have earned recognition on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams announced today. Four players earned first team honors, with another landing on the second unit.

Two of the Fighting Scot first team honorees are repeat performers, as Bernard Henry (Wadesboro, NC/Anson/ Vermilion JC) and Dave Smith (Polk, PA/Franklin) were named for the second straight year at running back and defensive line, respectively. They were joined on the first team by defensive back Derrick Davis (Cleveland, OH/Glenville) and linebacker Jermaine Hughley (New Kensington, PA/Valley). Stephane Lubin (Brampton, ONT/Brampton Centennial), a first team selection as a return specialist, was named to the second team at wide receiver.

Henry, a 5'11", 192 lb. senior, enjoyed his second straight 1,000-yard season, becoming just the fourth Fighting Scot with multiple 1,000-yard campaigns. He finished with 1,054 yards on 177 carries, a 6.0 yard average, with 7 TDs. In addition, he was the third-leading receiver with 14 catches for 132 yards, and returned one kickoff, that going for 99 yards and a touchdown against California(Pa.). His numbers might have been even higher if not for a groin injury which forced him to miss one game and half on another.

Henry's top rushing effort came against Mercyhurst, as he gained 263 yards, the fourth-highest single-game total, on 29 carries. That was one of four games with 100-or-more yards, and he narrowly missed the 200-yard mark again with 198 yards on 16 rushes vs. California(Pa.). He concludes his two seasons with 2,100 yards rushing on 397 carries. Both figures rank sixth all-time.

Smith is a 6'3", 245 lb. defensive end who recorded 40 tackles, including 10 behind the line of scrimmage for minus 42 yards. That figure was tied for the team lead, and the sophomore added 4.5 sacks, second on the team. He also broke up a pass, blocked an extra point, and forced two fumbles. Smith had 7 tackles with 1.5 sacks at Clarion, and also had 7 stops at Youngstown State. He now has 12.5 career sacks in just two seasons.

After sitting out the 1999 season, Davis returned to turn in a strong senior campaign. The 6'2", 200 lb. strong safety was a vicious hitter who totaled 43 tackles, tied for fifth on the team. He joined Smith with 10 tackles for losses, good for minus 37 yards, and had a team-leading 5 sacks. Davis intercepted one pass, broke up one pass and forced one fumble. His top effort came against West Chester, as he recorded 10 tackles, with 5 for losses and 2 sacks.

Hughley ended his freshman season with 50 tackles, fourth on the team, despite missing three games due to a concussion. The 6'0", 210 lb. linebacker became a force late in the year and is one of the building blocks for the future. He had 9 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 34 yards, with one sack, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. Hughley posted a season-high 11 tackles in Edinboro's win over Shippensburg, the came back with 9 hits and a sack in the season-ending triumph over East Stroudsburg.

Lubin moved from running back to wide receiver just prior to training camp, and proceeded to lead the Fighting Scots with 31 receptions for 298 yards and 2 TDs. He added 35 yards rushing on 5 carries, and returned 10 kickoffs for an average of 17.9 yards. He caught a season-high 6 passes for 60 yards in the opener vs. Ashland, then ended the season with 5 catches against both Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg.

Edinboro finished its first season under head coach Lou Tepper with a 5-6 record, the most wins since the 1996 campaign.
