EDINBORO, PA - Edinboro University men's basketball standout Kenny Tate (Philadelphia, PA/Chester) was named the Division II Bulletin Player of the Month for November, while the team entered the Division II top-25 for the first time since the 1997-98 season.
The Fighting Scots, off to a 5-0 start, jumped from "others receiving consideration" to 17th in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches poll. Eighth-year mentor Greg Walcavich piloted Edinboro to a season-opening 12-game win streak as a first year coach in 1989-90.
Florida Southern (5-0), Kentucky Wesleyan (4-0), Southern Indiana (4-0), Northern Kentucky (8-0) and Washburn (4-1) comprise the top five, respectively. The only other PSAC team in the top-25 is West Chester (3-2), while Millersville (4-0) is receiving consideration.
A big reason for Edinboro's success has been the play of junior Kenny Tate. The 6'4" forward is averaging a team-high 19.2 points per game along with 9.6 rpg. The former Chester High School standout is shooting 47.2 percent (42 of 89) from the floor with 8 steals on the year.
Tate is the first men's player in Edinboro history to received Player of the Month recognition by the Division II Bulletin. Former women's basketball standout Jessica Rowe won the award in January of last season.
Tate, a junior college transfer in his second year as a Fighting Scot, averaged 24.5 ppg. and 11.5 rpg. in November. The preseason All-American dropped a 27-point, 15-rebound night on Gannon, ranked 19th in Division II at the time, in Edinboro's 91-80 win over the Golden Knights on November 21.
The latest Division II Bulletin publication is the culmination to an outstanding week of Edinboro men's basketball. On Saturday, December 2 coach Walcavich won his 200th game at the helm of the Fighting Scots, defeating East Stroudsburg, 69-55. Walcavich now has a career ledger of 201-114 for a winning percentage of .638.
Senior Adam Kaufman (Coraopolis, PA/Montour) one-upped his mentor on Sunday, December 3 when he became the all-time assists leader in the PSAC. The 5'11" point guard delivered 9 assists in the 78-55 win to give him 730 career assists. The previous mark of 725 assists, set by Delmar Beshore of California(Pa.) (1974-78), fell when Jason Roseto (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) dropped in a four-footer off a Kaufman inbound pass with 56 seconds remaining in the first half.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, December 9 when it entertains Ohio Valley at 5:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots are 5-0 in the friendly confines of McComb Fieldhouse.
