EDINBORO, PA - The West got the best of the East in the opening round of the 2000 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship on Friday night. Both Western Division schools came away with three-game wins over their Eastern Division counterparts, setting up a rematch of the last four PSAC title matches.
Edinboro, the host school and number one seed in the Western Division, handled Shippensburg, 15-3, 15-6, 15-1 in the evening s second match. In the lidlifter, Lock Haven disposed of Eastern Division champion East Stroudsburg in three games, 15-7, 15-12, 15-6.
Edinboro is after its fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, while Lock Haven seeks its seventh straight NCAA postseason appearance. Lock Haven defeated Edinboro in four games a year ago, and also won in 1996, with the Fighting Scots capturing the championship tilts in 1997 and style="mso-spacerun: yes"> This marks the 13th straight year Edinboro will play in the PSAC championship game.
With the victory over the Lady Raiders, Edinboro improved to 20-6, with Shippensburg falling to 19-15. Coach Lynn Theehs Edinboro teams have now won 20-or-more games the last five seasons and six times in her seven-year reign.
Freshman Amy Medicus paced the Fighting Scots with 10 kills and 13 digs. Abby Galcik added 9 kills, with Sarah Roseto contributing 12 digs. Lisa Poeschl improved her career-record assist total to 4,339 with 33 assists. The senior leads the PSAC in assists per game. Former Fighting Scot Jenn Fuhrman, a second All-PSAC West selection a year ago as a member of the Boro, was limited to 9 kills. The senior middle hitter came into the match with a Shippensburg-record 480 kills.
Lock Haven had little trouble improving to 24-9 against East Stroudsburg. The Lady Eagles, the top ranked team in the Atlantic Region, were led by Kathryn Stallings 19 kills. The 5 10T senior leads the PSAC in blocks, and added to that total with 2 block solos and 5 block assists. Stef LaFata added 12 kills and 10 digs, while Kelli Crouch had 10 kills. Shana Fessette posted 42 assists.
East Stroudsburg finishes at 16-16. The Warriors were making their first PSAC Tournament appearance since 1997. April Mellott, the 1999 PSAC East Rookie of the Year, had 8 kills, with Andrea Myers and Sarah Brown adding 7 apiece.
Edinboro and Lock Haven have met twice this season. The Lady Eagles made it five straight wins over Edinboro with a 15-4, 15-2, 14-16, 15-10 triumph in mid-September, but the Fighting Scots broke the streak in impressive fashion with a 15-13, 15-13, 17-15 victory a month later. That match consequently earned the Scots the right to host the PSAC Tournament.
