EDINBORO, PA - The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has announced its 2001 All-PSAC women's soccer teams. Head coach Gary Kagiavas received the prestigious Coach of the Year award. Junior defender Kim Liwush (Ontario, NY/Webster) and sophomore midfielder Jamie Tekotte (Erie, PA/McDowell) were selected to the first team, while junior forward Nicole Vlahovic (Oakville, ONT/Queen Elizabeth Park) earned second team honors.
Kagiavas was excited when he found out the good news. "It's a great honor to be named coach of the year, but its all a tribute to the girls," Kagiavas remarked. "Your only as good as your players, and I share this award with them," Kagiavas concluded.
Kagiavas led his Edinboro squad to a first-ever berth in the PSAC Tournament after posting a school record 11-5-1 overall record and an 8-2-1 mark in conference action. Edinboro has improved each year, starting with a 2-14-0 record in 1996, and improving to its best record in school history this season. Edinboro competed with four teams that advanced to the national tournament, defeating one team and losing to the other three by a goal.
Kagiavas was named the program's first-ever coach in 1996 and has compiled a 46-56-4 record during his six seasons. Last year, he guided his program to its first winning season with a 10-8-1 record, giving him a 21-13-2 ledger over the last two seasons. This is Kagiavas' first PSAC Coach of the Year Award.
Liwush and Tekotte earned first team honors. This marks the second consecutive year that Liwush has received first team honors. Tekotte, a Central Michigan transfer, concluded her first season as a Fighting Scot, earning first team honors. Liwush played a crucial role in stopping the attack, while Tekotte played an important role in creating the attack.
Liwush started all 17 games for the Scots this season, leading the defense at the sweeper position. Liwush anchored a Fighting Scot defense that just allowed 20 goals, the lowest total in a season in school history. The junior defender also was an important factor in capturing Edinboro's seven shutouts, one off last year's school record of eight.
Tekotte was named to the All-PSAC first team as a midfielder. She started all 17 matches accounting for 12 goals and 5 assists for 29 points. Tekotte finished second in scoring while tying the school record for goals in a season. She also scored her first collegiate hat trick, when Edinboro defeated Massachusetts Lowell in the Saint Rose Tournament.
Vlahovic started every game for Edinboro and set two school records. The junior forward set the season points record with 31, scoring 12 goals and recording five assists. Vlahovic set a new school record for career points with 80.
