MEN'S SWIMMING TEAM FINISHES 8TH, WOMEN 10TH AT PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Kent Shrontz Captures Fifth Place in 100-Yard Backstroke

EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University men's and women's swimming teams competed in the PSAC Championships on Thursday, February 21 through Saturday, February 23 at Clarion University. The men placed eighth out of eight teams and the women finished tenth out of 12 teams.

The women earned 47 points, while West Chester dominated the field with 740 points to capture their second consecutive crown. Clarion took second place with 389 points and Bloomsburg placed third with 272 points. The Fighting Scots defeated the Lock Haven and Mansfield women.

The men scored 52 points, while West Chester and Clarion came out on top for the men, as well, scoring 593 and 480.5 points, respectively. The West Chester men won their fourth title in a row. Shippensburg finished third with 240.5 points.

Kent Shrontz (Canonsburg, PA/ Canon MacMillan) led all Edinboro swimmers with a fifth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. The senior touched in a time of 55.09.

In addition to Shrontz's fifth place finish, the men earned three other individual places. Shrontz also placed ninth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.79. Shane Littler (Coraopolis, PA/West Allegheny) placed 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.92 and Darren Redding (Lake City, PA/Girard) placed 12th in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.66.

The men's relay teams captured one seventh-place and two eighth-place finishes. The 400-yard freestyle team placed seventh with a time of 3:20.63. The team consisted of Seth Murphy (Webster, NY/Webster), Will Ranta (Ashtabula, OH/Ashtabula), Redding, and Shrontz. Murphy, Ranta, Brian Korol (South Park, PA/South Park), and Shrontz competed in the 800-yard freestyle and placed eighth with a time of 7:31.74. The 200-yard medley team (Shrontz, Littler, Matt Weber (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake), and Redding) finished eighth with a time of 1:40.93.

The women earned five individual places. Amber Walsh (Erie, PA/McDowell) finished eighth in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:56.19 and ninth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:19.30. Cindy Nelson (Erie, PA/Fairview) also placed in two events, finishing 17th in the 1650 freestyle (19:27.57) and 20th in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:31.10). Amy Staniszewski (Pittsburgh, PA/South Park) placed 12th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.84.

The women's relay teams placed in three events. Staniszewski, Walsh, Meri Surdoval (Moon, PA/Moon), and Melissa Weil (Fombell, PA/Riverside), placed eighth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:57.64. The women's 800-yard freestyle team also finished eighth with a time of 8:22.44. The team consisted of Weil, Amy Reed (Erie, PA/Fairview), Shannon Holland (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek), and Nelson. The same team placed 10th in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:47.56.

The women finished the season 4-7 and the men rest at 1-8.
