EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University wrestling team is in sixth place going into the final matches in the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational. The three remaining Fighting Scots competing for third place finishes are; #7 Dave Shunamon (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury), #10 Cory Ace (Franklin, PA/Franklin), and Chad Caros (Franklinville, NY/Suffern).
Here are the results, listed by weight class:
125 lbs. - Shawn Bunch (Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) finished with a 3-2 record. Bunch lost his first match, 5-3 to West Virginia's Rick LeForge. He went on to win his next three matches; first over Virginia's Byron Dunlop, 8-0, Starlin Jiminez from Clarion, 10-5, Barange from San Francisco State, 8-3. Bunch lost his final match to Mike Simpson from Arizona State, 3-2.
133 lbs. - #10 Cory Ace is still competing for a third place in the invitational. Ace is 5-1 going into the third place match. Ace defeated Ruiz from VMI, 11-2, Monroe from Army, 17-5, and recorded two pins, Mckonville of Wyoming at 4:35, and over fourth seed Travis Drake at 2:07. Drake is ranked 12th by the Amateur Wrestling News. Ace lost in his semi-final match to Clarion's Rad Martinez, 8-5. Ace then defeated Fresno State's Hayes, 9-7 to advance him into a third place match against Lauer from West Virginia.
141 lbs. - Chad Caros is 6-1 entering his third place match. Caros won his first match over Harvard's Turrilli by a 17-2 score. Caros lost his second match, 7-4, to Wyoming's Hamrick. In the wrestlebacks, Caros won his next five matches. He pinned Dodgen from Central Oklahoma in 1:36, and also defeated LaHaye of Western State 21-2, Lopez - 20th in the Amateur Wrestling News, from Fresno State, 8-7, Oregon's Watson, 2-1, and won by default over Arizona States Douglas. Caros will face Horn from Oregon State in his third place match.
149 lbs. - Nate Yetzer (Mansfield, OH/Mansfield Madison) did not compete. Yetzer became sick and could not wrestle.
157 lbs. - Ryan Yates (Lower Burrell, PA/Burrell) went 1-2 in the invitational. He lost his first match to Boccia of Appalachian State, 12-4. Yates defeated Northwestern Wyoming's Fulton, 5-0, before losing his third match to Fresno State's Baca, 7-0.
165 lbs. - Matt R. King (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) placed fifth in the invitational with a 5-2 record. King pinned Adams State's Romero in his first match at 1:48. King defeated second seeded mark Kelly of Michigan, 10-3 in his second bout. He lost his third match to Arizona State's Nick Frost - 14th by the Amateur Wrestling News, 5-3. King then pinned Columbia's Nagy at 1:10 in his fourth bout. King also pinned Fronhoffer - seventh by the Amateur Wrestling News, from Pitt at 5:51. King lost to Oregon's Eugene Harris, 3-2, sending him into his last match. Arizona State's Frost forfeited the match, placing King at fifth.
174 lbs. - Vinnie Courts (Middletown, PA/Cumberland Valley) went 1-2 at the invitational. Courts lost his first match to sixth seeded Fuller from North Dakota State, 4-0. He beat Kuhl from Dana College, 9-3. In his last match he suffered a 2-0 overtime loss from Augustana College's Meester.
184 lbs. - Matt Camino (Solon, OH/Solon) finished with a 2-2 record. Camino lost his first match, 8-4, to Central Oklahoma's Henning. He came back to win his next two matches, 6-0 over the Airforce's Peterson and 2-1 over Colorado's Dubrovich. Camino lost his final match to Sandline from Cal Poly, 5-1.
197 lbs. - #10 Dave Shunamon is 5-1 and competing for a third place at the invitational. Shunamon won his first two matches, 12-4 over North Dakota State's Kraemer, and 13-4 over Airforce's Kaiser. Lawal from Central Oklahoma defeated Shunamon, 9-5, in his third bout. Shunamon then won his next three matches, 9-4 over Botelho from Fresno, 13-3 over Odell from Bakersfield, and a 3-1 decision over Sandberg - tenth by the Amateur Wrestling News from Pitt. He will face Nebraska's Justin Ruiz, who is sixth by the Amateur Wrestling News in his battle for third place.
HWT. - Josh Pearce (Greenville, PA/Commodore Perry) finished in sixth place with a 6-1 record. Pearce won his first two matches, by a 6-0 decision over Central Washington's Shipp, and pinning Schunke at 3:51 from Northern Colorado. Pearce lost his third match to fifth seeded Eric Webb from Oregon, ranked ninth by Amateur Wrestling News, by a 6-5 decision. Pearce went on to win his next four matches. Pearce defeated Paul from Cal Davis, 5-0, Brycer from North Dakota State, 5-1, won by forfeit over West Virginia's Ryan Kehler, ranked 14th by the Amateur Wrestling News, and a 4-1 decision over Clarion's John Testa.
The Fighting Scots are ranked 14th in the latest InterMat Division I poll, and were 11th in the Amateur Wrestling News preseason rankings. Edinboro will return to dual meet action while competing against its second EWL foe on Thursday, December 6, squaring off against Cleveland Sate in Cleveland. The match begins at 7:30 p.m.
