Fighting Scots Run Win Streak to Nine

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University wrestling team extended its dual match winning streak to nine matches with three wins in the Avalon Duals on Saturday. The 11th-ranked Fighting Scots improved to 4-0 on the young season thanks to a 32-6 win over Eastern Michigan, a 32-14 triumph over Findlay, and a 34-3 defeat of Princeton.

In the afternoon’s other matches, Findlay defeated Princeton, 22-16, Princeton beat Eastern Michigan, 23-13, and Findlay upended Eastern Michigan, 22-14.

Here’s a look at the highlights from the three matches:

Edinboro 32, Eastern Michigan 6

The Fighting Scots won nine of the ten bouts, the lone loss coming at 149 lbs. where Keon Suggs won by fall over Matt D. King (North East, PA/North East) at 4:20. King was filling in for starter Nate Yetzer (Mansfield, OH/Mansfield Madison). Five Boro grapplers won by major decision, as Chad Caros (Franklinville, NY/Suffern) was a 16-7 winner over Josh Wiles at 141 lbs., Ryan Yates (Lower Burrell, PA/Burrell) captured his 157 lb. match by a 9-0 count over Derrick Keasley, Vinnie Courts (Middletown, PA/Cumberland Valley) defeated Chris Slater by a 13-5 score at 165 lbs., Matt R. King (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) was a 19-7 winner over Adam Gilmore at 174 lbs., and fifth-ranked David Shunamon (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury) picked up a 12-4 win over Travis Kraft at 197 lbs.

Edinboro 32, Findlay 14

The Fighting Scots won four of the first five matches then saw Findlay win the next three bouts to pull to within 17-14. Shunamon got the Boro back on track, avenging one of his two losses this season with a dominating 8-4 win over Brian Scislo at 197 lbs. Shunamon was a 1-1 loser by rideout to Scislo in his first match of the year at the EMU Open. The loss was the first for Scislo, who came in with a 9-0 mark. That victory was followed by two wins by fall as Edinboro won going away. Heavyweight Josh Pearce (Greenville, PA/Commodore Perry) picked up his second pin of the year, dropping Ray Bond at 2:29. Impressive freshman Shawn Bunch (Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) followed with a win by fall at 3:26 over Jack Scott. Cory Ace (Franklin, PA/Franklin), ranked eighth at 133 lbs., won by fall at 5:50 over Mitch Airing, while Caros was a win by technical fall at 141 lbs. over Angelo Vettese.

Edinboro 34, Princeton 3

Besides a 7-4 win for Princeton’s Milo Adams over Charlie Soto (El Paso, TX/J.M. Hanks) at 149 lbs., Edinboro captured nine of ten matches. Soto normally competes at 133 lbs. Shunamon picked up his third win of the day to improve to 8-2 with the lone win by fall, dropping Matt Fisher at 3:27 in the 197 lb. bout. Four other Scots scored major decisions – Ace at 133 lbs. with a 10-2 win over John Knorring, Caros at 141 lbs. with a 14-5 triumph against Juan Venturi, Yates at 157 lbs. with an 11-3 win over Albert Pendleton, and King at 165 lbs. on the strength of a 13-5 victory over Andrew Avsec.

The Fighting Scots return to action on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1 at the prestigious Las Vegas Invitational.
