EDINBORO, PA – Edinboro University junior D.J. Sammel (Pittsburgh, PA/Langley) has been named to the 2002 NCAA Division II North Atlantic All-Region team. Sammel earned a spot on the elite squad at third base, becoming the first Fighting Scot recognized on the first unit since Shaun Hayes in 1999. He previously earned a spot on the All-PSAC West first team for the second straight year.
Sammel, a 6’3”, 215 lb. junior, finished the season with a team-leading .400 average, becoming the first Fighting Scot to hit .400 since 1998. He also led the Scots in hits (52), was tied for the team lead in doubles (8), while finishing second in RBIs (24) and stolen bases (7). He ranked fourth in the PSAC in batting. It also marked the third straight year Sammel has hit better than .300, as he boosted his career batting average to .355. He hit .325 as a sophomore and .333 as a freshman.
In all, Sammel had 17 multiple hit games, including five three-hit games. He owned an eight game hitting streak, a seven game streak, and a six game streak.
The All-North Atlantic Region team featured nine players from Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference schools and five from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Nine more PSAC players were accorded second team accolades. California (PA) outfielder Ryan Balan was named the North Atlantic Region Player of the Year, with Glenn Woolard of Kutztown recognized as the Pitcher of the Year.
Edinboro finished its first season under House with a 11-29 record.
