FIGHTING SCOTS SWEEP BUFFALO STATE INVITATIONAL

EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2004 season in impressive fashion, as both teams placed first in the Buffalo State Invitational in Grand Island, NY. The meet was run in oppressive 87 degree temperatures with nary a breeze.

On the women's side, Edinboro placed first with 35 points, followed by Malone (51 points), Geneseo (64) and Indiana(Pa.) (92). A total of nine teams competed in the women's race. The Edinboro men finished with 37 points to easily outdistance second place Geneseo, who had 58 points. Malone finished third in the eight-team field with 65 points, and IUP was fourth with 75 points.

Indiana(Pa.)'s Mindy Sawtelle, the runner-up at last year's NCAA Division II national Championships, edged Edinboro junior Julie Nemergut (Youngstown, OH/South Range) for first place in the women's race. Sawtelle crossed the finish line at 18:45, while Nemergut's time was 18:57. Sophomore Heather Wilmoth (Sugar Grove, PA/Eisenhower) was next for the Fighting Scots with a sixth place finish (19:28), followed by junior Kelly Richards (7th-19:47), freshman Rachael Lanzel (St. Mary's, PA/St. Mary's) (8th-19:54) and junior Kiersten Buckley (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) (12th-20:06). Head coach Doug Watts held out two of Edinboro's top runners.

On the men's side, Malone's Alan Kermando was the individual champion with a time of 26:23. The top Edinboro runner was junior Ryan Coon (Clymer, NY/Sherman), a returning All-American, who placed fourth with a time of 26:41. Jim Ansberry (Solon, OH/Solon), a senior who earned All-American honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this spring, placed sixth (26:57), with senior Mark Hryvniak (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) seventh (27:04), junior Jared Lowry (North Canton, OH/North Canton Hoover) eighth (27:09), and freshman John Moneyhon (Columbus, OH/Dublin Coffman) 12th (27:38).
