WOMEN'S TEAM FINISHES SECOND, MEN SEVENTH AT CROSS COUNTRY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Six Fighting Scots Earn All-American Honors, Led by Julie Nemergut's Fifth Place Showing

EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University women's and men's cross country teams turned in impressive showings in the NCAA Division II National Championships at Evansville, IN. The women's team recorded its highest finish ever, placing second with 101 points. Adams State was the national champion with 31 points. The previous highest finish for a women's team was third in 1999. The men's team, meanwhile, placed seventh, its highest finish since the 2000 team finished fourth. Western State won the title with 39 points. Adams State was second (76 points) and Abilene Christian was third (137). Edinboro totaled 231 points.

In addition to the strong team showings, Edinboro had a total of six runners earn All-American honors - four on the women' side, two on the men's side. Leading the way was Julie Nemergut (Youngstown, OH/South Range) continued her strong postseason run with a fifth place finish after winning the championships at both the PSAC Championships and East Regionals. The junior earned All-American honors for the first time, crossing the finish line at 21:59.7. Alisha Williams of Western State was the individual champion with a time of 21:42.7.

Freshman Rachael Lanzel (St. Mary's, PA/St. Mary's) earned All-American honors with a 16th-place finish (22:47.5), and she was joined by Heather Wilmoth (Sugar Grove, PA/Eisenhower) (18th -22:50.8) and Kelly Richards (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) (24th - 23:11.0). Lindsay Roberts (Wattsburg, PA/Seneca) and Lisa Gallagher (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) completed the Edinboro contingent, finishing 38th (23:22.3) and 40th (23:25.4). Genise Green (Union City, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) was unable to finish the race due to an ankle injury.

On the men's side, Ryan Coon (Clymer, NY/Sherman) joined the list of two-time All-Americans with his second straight certificate. Coon placed 17th with a time of 32:48.3. He was the Eastern Regional champion two weeks ago. Jim Ansberry (Solon, OH/Solon), who was unable to finish the regional due to illness, made up for it Nationals with a strong showing. The senior finished with a time of 33:16.3, good for 30th place and All-American honors.

Jeremy Boehm (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) (53rd - 33:56.3), Jared Lowry (North Canton, OH/Hoover) (58th - 34:08.5) and Dave Niemira (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) (73rd - 34:25.4) completed Edinboro's scorers. Mark Hryvniak (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute), with a 78th place finish (34:29.0), and Joe Reynolds (North East, PA/North East), who placed 108th (35:07.5), also competed for Edinboro. The men's team also was missing a key runner, as Dan Field (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) missed the Nationals due to strep throat.
