EDINBORO, PA - A week ago the Edinboro University women's cross country team dominated the competition while winning its seventh straight PSAC championship. Today the Fighting Scots had to work a little harder, but the result was the same - a first place finish in the NCAA Division II East Regional. Edinboro, ranked fifth in Division II, finished with 30 points, outdistancing Kutztown, who was second with 112 points, and Slippery Rock, the third place finisher with 135 points, for its sixth East Regional title in the last seven years.
The men's team shared a similar fate as last week, as well, but in the process will join the women's squad at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Evansville, Indiana on Saturday, November 20. The top two teams from the regional advance to Nationals. Lock Haven garnered the first spot, although the Fighting Scots closed the gap considerably. The Bald Eagles, ranked seventh in Division II, totaled 36 points while the 21st-ranked Fighting Scots were second with 56 points. Shippensburg was a distant third with 111 points. This marks Edinboro's second straight second place finish at regionals after 11 straight regional titles.
A total of 25 teams competed in the women's race, with 26 teams in the men's competition.
"It was a very, very good team run," related head coach Doug Watts. "Julie (Nemergut) once again got to two miles and ran away from the two top five finishers at Nationals last year. Some of our young girls were tired after last week, but we had others who picked it up. For the men, at four miles we were in the race for victory, but I pulled our second runner - Jim Ansberry - who wasn't feeling well. I'm very, very happy with the results. It solidifies what we preach that we train for the end of the season."
In addition to the strong team showing, Edinboro captured both the women's and men's individual titles. Julie Nemergut (Youngstown, OH/South Range) backed up her first place finish at the PSAC Championships with another first place finish, once again defeating Indiana(Pa.)'s Mindy Sawtelle, who was the defending champion and finished second at last year's national championships, and Vanessa Andes of East Stroudsburg, who was also in the top five at Nationals a year ago. Nemergut finished with a time of 20:29, besting Sawtelle by 14 seconds. Andes finished fourth.
Nemergut was named the women's Most Outstanding Runner, while Ryan Coon (Clymer, NY/Sherman) garnered the honor on the men's side. After falling a week ago and settling for a third place finish at the PSAC Championships, Coon captured first place with a five-second win over Lock Haven's Chris Cowan. The junior finished with a time of 31:41, with Cowan at 31:46 and teammate Ryan Blood third at 32:02.
Not only did all five Edinboro women's runners earn All-East Region honors, the Scots also had a sixth All-Region runner as six of the top 15 runners were from the Boro. Edinboro had five of the top nine finishers. Heather Wilmoth (Sugar Grove, PA/ Eisenhower) placed fifth with a time of 21:33. Lindsay Roberts (Wattsburg, PA/Seneca) took seventh place (21:41), with freshman Rachael Lanzel (St. Mary's, PA/St. Mary's) eighth with a time of 21:41, and Kelly Richards (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) ninth (21:45). While not a scorer for the Scots, Genise Green (Union City, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) finished 13th for All-Region honors with a time of 22:09. Lisa Gallagher (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) placed 19th (22:33).
On the men's side, four runners earned All-East Region accolades. In addition to Coon, Mark Hryvniak (Rochester, NY/ Aquinas Institute) was 11th (32:53), Jared Lowry (North Canton, OH/North Canton Hoover) was 13th (32:56), and Dan Field (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) placed 14th (32:57). Dave Niemira (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) was Edinboro's fifth runner with a 17th place finish (33:13), while Jeremy Boehm (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) finished 19th (33:24).
