EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University women's soccer team broke out of scoring slump in impressive fashion on Saturday, celebrating Homecoming with a 5-0 win over Clarion. The Fighting Scots had not scored in their last two matches and snapped a two-match losing streak. Edinboro is now 5-5-2 overall and 3-3-0 in the PSAC West, while Clarion falls to 1-12-0 and 0-6-0, respectively.
Edinboro took a quick 1-0 lead just 6 minutes, 29 seconds into the match on freshman Mary Grebenc's (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) first career goal, assisted by Stacie Potter (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone). The score would remain that way at the end of the half.
The Fighting Scots dominated the second half, scoring four goals while outshooting the Golden Eagles 8-1. Three of the goals came in less than a seven-minute span, starting with Angie de Almeida's (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) goal off an assist by Daryl Estremera (Columbia Station, OH/Olmested Falls) at 48:55. Kara Ciacchini (Erie, PA/McDowell) made it 3-0 at the 53:06 mark, assisted by Ashley Pulman (LaSalle, ONT/Sandwich Secondary), and at the 55:00 mark Pulman scored her fifth goal of the season thanks to an assist from Grebenc.
Shauna Wolf (Mansfield, OH/Clear Fork) accounted for the final goal at 77:19, assisted by Becky Hostettler (Edinboro, PA/General McLane).
Trish Chilcott (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) picked up the shutout in goal for Edinboro, registering 5 saves as the Scots outshot Clarion, 17-8.
Edinboro now has a stretch of five straight road matches, beginning on Wednesday, October 13 at California(Pa.).
