WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM OPENS WITH 5-1 WIN OVER SHIPPENSBURG

Four Freshman Score Goals in Season Opener

EDINBORO, PA - With a roster featuring 13 freshmen and six sophomores, Edinboro University women's soccer coach Gary Kagiavas didn't know what to expect for the 2004 season. Youth was served as the Fighting scots opened the 2004 season in the Shippensburg Invitational on Friday afternoon. Freshmen accounted for four goals and four assists as a youthful Edinboro team debuted with a 5-1 win over host Shippensburg.

Edinboro held a slim 1-0 lead thanks to a late first half goal as sophomore Amy DiVincenzo (Irwin, PA/Penn Trafford) scored his first career goal in the 43rd minute. Freshman Elise Falatach (Bay Village, OH/Bay) assisted on the goal.

The Fighting Scots scored three goals in a 20-minte span in the second half to put the match away. Ashley Pulman (LaSalle, ONT/Sandwich Secondary), a redshirt freshman who sat out last season following knee surgery, scored in the 51st minute, assisted by Coastal Carolina transfer Shauana Wolf (Mansfield, OH/Clear Fork). Falatach notched her first career goal in the 66th minute, assisted by Katie DeLuca (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent), yet another freshman. DeLuca came up with her first career goal three minutes later, with Pulman assisting.

Shippensburg broke into the scoring column on a goal by Nikki Kegerreis in the 79th minute, but Edinboro responded on Angie de Almeida's (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) goal, assisted by Falatach and Maura Sansone (Erie, PA/McDowell). de Almeida is another first year performer.

Trish Chilcott (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) picked up the win in goal, registering 5 saves. Edinboro outshot Shippensburg, 17-7.

The Fighting Scots return to action at 12 noon on Saturday, facing Kutztown.
