EDINBORO, PA - The stamina of the young Edinboro University volleyball team was put to the test in the opening day of the Fighting Scot Invitational. The Fighting Scots were forced to go five games in both of their matches. They came away with a 30-22, 18-30, 30-27, 26-30, 15-7 triumph over Saint Leo's in their first match, but squandered a two games to one lead against Carson-Newman and lost in five games. The Fighting Scots are now 2-3.
The scores of the Carson-Newman match were 30-28, 14-30, 26-30, 32-030, 15-7. Edinboro fell behind by an 8-2 count in the fifth game and could pull no closer than four points. Freshman Breanna Smith (North Canton, OH/Nnorth Canton Hoover) led the Scots with 19 kills, while fellow first-year performer Jenna Newman (Las Vegas, NV/Coronado) added 18 kills. Marissa DeLiberato (Parma, OH/Parma Franciscan) had 29 digs and Renee Kam (Eden, NY/Eden) totaled 55 assists.
In the Saint Leo contest, Smith led the Scots 14 kills, and Amelia Robinson (Amherst, OH/Marion L. Steele) added 10. DeLiberato had 22 digs and Kam 36 assists.
Edinboro will play a pair of matches on Saturday. At 10:00 a.m. the Fighting Scots host West Virginia Wesleyan, followed by a 2:30 p.m. match vs. undefeated Florida Southern. The Lady Mocs are now a perfect 6-0 after defeating Charleston(WV) and West Virginia Wesleyan.
