EDINBORO, PA - The 2004-05 season got underway for the Edinboro University wrestling team on Saturday, as the Fighting Scots competed in the EMU Open in Ypsilanti, MI. A total of eight Fighting Scots placed, led by Shawn Bunch (Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) and Nate Yetzer (Mansfield, OH/Madison), who finished first at 133 and 165 lbs., respectively.
In addition to the two first place finishers, Matt Hill (Freedom, PA/Freedom) took home second place at 157 lbs. and fellow sophomore Jim Gibson (Hermitage, PA/Kennedy Catholic) finished as the runnerup at 184 lbs. Deonte Penn (Solon, OH/Solon) grabbed third place at 165 lbs., Eric Ring (Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) was fifth at 174 lbs., and the Scots had two placewinners at 141 lbs. Ron Doppelheuer (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) finished fifth with a win over teammate J.T. Taylor (Boca Raton, FL/Cardinal Gibbons), who ended sixth.
Bunch made a triumphant return after redshirting a year ago, going 5-0 at 133 lbs. He defeated Michigan's Craig Gillison by a 15-8 score in the title bout. The junior opened with a 13-6 win over Andrew Jones of Gannon, then followed with back-to-back falls over Eastern Michigan's Jim Fulger (4:25) and Cleveland State's Ryan Riggs (1:15). He advanced to the finals with a 12-5 triumph over Samuel Gray of Navy. Bunch entered the tournament ranked seventh by InterMat and tenth by Amateur Wrestling News.
Yetzer began his quest for a second All-American award with five straight wins at 165 lbs., and claimed first place at the EMU Open for the second straight year. A year ago the senior placed eighth at 174 lbs. at Nationals. He was once again dominant in advancing to the final. Yetzer won his first three matches by technical fall, defeating Rob Blunk, 15-0, then eliminating Joe Patterson of Findlay at 5:11, and finally besting Michigan State's Jeremy Bloom by a 16-0 score at 4:56. He met teammate Penn in the semifinals, and came way with a 14-4 major decision. He won the championship with a 7-5 decision over Michigan's Steve Luke. Yetzer is ranked fifth by InterMat and sixth by Amateur Wrestling News.
Hill made a successful debut as the starter at 157 lbs. The sophomore opened the tournament with an 11-4 win over Mack Mroz of Grand Valley State, then followed with a 6-5 victory against Jeff Marsh of Michigan. Hill reached the semifinals with a 3-1 overtime disqualification win over Navy's Patrick Lukarich, then met Bloomsburg's Aric Fuhrman in the semifinals. Hill advanced with a 7-6 win, before dropping the title bout by a 6-5 count to Central Michigan's Eric Neil.
Gibson won three of his four matches while coming away with second place at 184 lbs. He opened with a 7-1 triumph over Jesse Hasseman of Bloomsburg, followed by a 7-0 win over Olivet's Ryan Newberry. He met Michigan State's John Murphy in the semifinals, coming away with a 1-0 win. Bloomsburg's Nate Shirk defeated Gibson in the title match by a 6-3 score.
Though redshirting this season, Penn made a strong showing while moving up from 149 lbs. to 165 lbs. he won his first match by technical fall over Chad Gilkey of Cleveland State, 18-2, then needed just 23 seconds to pin Jeff Skinner of Grand Valley State. After losing to Yetzer in the semifinals, he picked up two more win sto go 4-1 and place third. His first wrestleback match was a 7-2 victory over Central Michigan's Justin Petrone, followed by an 8-0 win over Bloomsburg's Jim Bertulis in the third place match.
Ring is another wrestler moving up two classes, going from 157 lbs. to 174 lbs. The junior finished with a 4-2 record. He reached the semifinals with three straight wins - 14-3 over Barry Brown of Bethel, 5-2 over Mike Andrews of Olivet, and 10-0 over Olivet's Todd Miller. He dropped a 3-2 decision to Bloomsburg's Bryce Hasseman, then lost another close match, 4-2 to Michigan's Tyrell Todd. In the fifth place match, Ring won by forfeit over Ohio's Ryan Knapp.
Both Doppelheuer (4-2) and Taylor (3-3) reached the semifinals at 141 lbs. before settling for fifth and sixth place, respectively. Doppelheuer picked up wins in his first three matches at 141 lbs., beginning with a win by fall at 2:34 over James Post, followed by a 9-3 triumph against Purdue's Jake Patascil, and a 3-2 win over Navy's Nathan Gulosh. In the semifinals the junior dropped a 5-3 decision to Tony Greathouse of Michigan State. He lost a second straight match when he was pinned by Brandon Carter of Central Michigan at 1:36, but then won the fifth place match with a 7-3 triumph over Taylor.
Taylor had a solid showing in his first time out as a Fighting Scot. The sophomore was an 11-3 winner over Ali Nour of Findlay in his first match, then won by a 9-3 score over Erik Kruger of Central Michigan. He won by fall at 2:20 over Jason Borrelli of central Michigan in the quarterfinals, but was a 5-4 loser to Bloomsburg's Brad Forbes in the semifinals. Taylor lost his last two matches, as well, including a 6-2 setback to Navy's Gulash.
A number of other Edinboro wrestlers competed in the EMU Open. Here's how they fared:
Pat Wayne (Lowell, MA/Lowell) - 125 lbs. - went 1-2, picking up a win by a 14-2 score over Grand Valley State's Alex Larson in his first collegiate match before losing back-to-back matches.
Rick McLaughlin (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) - 141 lbs. - narrowly missed placing, going 3-2. Won his first two matches, 11-1 over Drew Latshaway and 12-7 against Central Michigan's Brandon Carter, who went on to finish third. He was a 5-4 loser to Tony Greathouse of Michigan State, then split matches against a pair of Navy grapplers, winning 8-5 vs. Timothy Manley and losing 9-4 to Nathan Gulosh.
Zach Plerhoples (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) - 149 lbs. - the starter at 149 lbs., he ran into two tough matches after opening with a 3-2 win over Indian's Justin King. The sophomore was a 4-2 loser to mark Powell of Purdue, who ended in fifth place, then was eliminated by fall at 5:59 to Michigan State's Darren McKnight, who went on to place fourth.
Jacob Gray (Essex Junction, VT/Essex) - 149 lbs. -- still adjusting to moving up to 149 lbs., the senior was 3-2 and now has 83 career wins. He won by fall over Gannon's Brandon Bunnell at 3:17, but then suffered a 9-3 loss to Central Michigan's Tim Ebenhoeh. He remained alive with a pair of wins in the wrestlebacks before falling bya 6-4 score to Mark Powell, of Purdue, the fifth place finisher.
Jay Morrison (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) - 149 lbs. - the freshman was 2-2 in his first collegiate action. After picking up a 5-3 win over EWL veteran Mark Piermattei of Bloomsburg, he dropped a 1-0 decision to Bethel's Cole Landuyt. He was an 8-7 winner against Findlay's Chad Turchetta, but then lost 5-2 to Justin King of Indiana.
Matt Chelsted (Saltsburg, PA/Blairsville-Saltsburg) - 149 lbs. - was 0-2, losing by identical scores of 10-3.
Josh Yetzer (Mansfield, OH/Madison) - 157 lbs. - went 2-2, with win sover Zach Strunk of Central Michigan (8-2) and Quinn Guernsey of Michigan State (6-2).
Mohamed Osman (Rocky Hill, CT/Rocky Hill) - 157 lbs. - went 1-2, with the win coming by default against Cleveland State's Marcus Effner.
Chris Bala (Darien, NY/Alexander Central) - 174 lbs. - the senior finished 2-2. Dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime to Greg Giodosik of Michigan State in his first match, but was a winner by technical fall at 4:21 over Mark Brengel of Grand Valley State, then defeated Jacob Tazzi of Gannon, 5-3. He was eliminated via a 7-2 defeat to Tyrell Todd of Michigan, who placed third.
Phil Moricone (Derry, NH/Pinkerton) - 174 lbs. - one of Edinboro's prize recruits, he went 4-2 with a pair of falls in his first collegiate action. Won by fall over a pair of Cumberland wrestlers - Zach Padgett (1:02) and Chris Slaughter (2:24) - and also picked up a 5-3 victory over Cleveland State's Matt Klinger and a 9-2 victory over Olivet's Todd Miller. Was eliminated by fall at 5:13 by Ryan Knapp of Ohio, who was sixth.
Donald Walker (Heidelberg, Germany/Heidelberg American) - 174 lbs. - was 2-2, with wins over Barry Brown of Bethel (13-3) and Dash Dudley of Michigan State (11-2).
Mike LaBella (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) - 197 lbs. - the regular at 197 lbs., he was 3-2, but had the misfortune of opening the day with an old foe, Chad Hoare of Bloomsburg. A year ago Hoare defeated LaBella, then a freshman, in two close bouts, including the PSAC championship match. Hoare came away with a 3-0 win on Saturday. LaBella rallied with three straight wins - 7-2 over Brock Troutman of Bloomsburg, by default over Findlay's Kris Klepacz, and 4-0 over Central Michigan's John McClure - before dropping out with a 5-2 loss to Michigan State's Jeff Clemen's. Clemen's went on to place fourth.
Koel Davia (Bethesda, MD/Union Local) - Hwt - made collegiate debut with 2-2 record. Narrowly lost to Michigan's Tony Grygorzyk, who would go on to place fourth, 2-1, before winning back-to-back 4-0 decisions over Chris Weidner and Eastern Michigan's Joe Wood. Was loser by fall at 59 seconds to Max Lossen of Michigan State.
