WRESTLING TEAM HIGHLY-RANKED ENTERING 2004-05 SEASON

Yetzer, Bunch and Hennis Among Ranked Individuals

EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University wrestling team will take to the mats for the first time in the 2004-05 season in just over a week, and when it does it will be as one of the top teams in the country. The Fighting Scots are ranked 19th in the NWCA/InterMat NCAA Division I Coaches Preseason Poll, while W.I.N. Magazine lists Edinboro 20th and The Wrestling Mall 22nd.

Edinboro finished the 2003-04 season with a 10-3 record, tying West Virginia for first place at the Eastern Wrestling League Tournament and winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crown. The Fighting Scots went on to finish 24th at the NCAA Division I National Championships. Edinboro opens the season on Saturday, November 6 competing in the EMU Open, then hosts Virginia, Appalachian State and Findlay in the Avalon Duals the following weekend.

In addition to the team rankings, a number of individuals rank among the national leaders in their respective weight classes. Leading the way is Nate Yetzer (Mansfield, OH/Madison). The senior wrestled at 174 lbs. a year ago, finishing with a 37-6 record and earning All-American honors with an eighth place finish. He moves down to 165 lbs. this year, with head coach Tim Flynn seeing him as a contender for the national championship. A year ago Matt King finished third at 165 lbs.

Yetzer is ranked fifth by InterMat, is sixth in the Amateur Wrestling News rankings, fourth according to W.I.N. Magazine, and is sixth in The Wrestling Mall poll, but at 174 lbs.

Shawn Bunch (Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) was red-shirted a year ago and now returns seeking his third trip to Nationals. Bunch fell one win shy of All-American honors at 125 lbs. as a freshman, then lost two of three matches as a sophomore at 133 lbs. He is expected to challenge for All-American honors this year at 133 lbs., and is ranked seventh by InterMat and tenth by Amateur Wrestling News. W.I.N. Magazine has Bunch ranked seventh in its preseason poll, while The Wrestling mall has him 11th. Bunch was 30-14 as a sophomore.

Heavyweight Joe Hennis (Mims, FL/Astronaut) made his first trip to Nationals a year ago. He lost both of his matches to finish 27-12. Hennis is ranked 18th in the InterMat poll, 19th by Amateur Wrestling News, 20th by The Wrestling Mall, and 17th by W.I.N. Magazine.

Eric Ring (Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Deonte Penn (Solon, OH/Solon) also appear in the national rankings, although in both instances that will change. Ring, a junior who was 11-15 a year ago while competing at 157 lbs., jumps up two weight classes to 174 lbs. W.I.N. Magazine has him ranked 20th at 157 lbs. Penn made his first trip to Nationals a year ago at 149 lbs., ending the year with a 27-13 record. A junior, he will red-shirt this season while competing at 165 lbs. at open tournaments. Penn shows up in The Wrestling Mall rankings in the 20th position at 149 lbs.
