EDINBORO, PA - Five Edinboro University runners qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships by posting qualifying times at the Duke Invitational in Durham, North Carolina this past weekend. Competition took place on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 at Wallace Wade Stadium on the campus of Duke University.
All-American Gabriela Hnilkova (Kravare, Czech Republic) was Edinboro's top finisher, placing second in the 10,000-meter run with an NCAA-qualifying time of 35:44.14. Junior Ashley Hansen (Erie, PA/ McDowell) and sophomore Kathy Breisch (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) finished in the top ten, posting NCAA-qualifying times of 37:35.04 and 37:48.04, respectively.
On the men's side, freshman Aaron Rowe (Dublin, OH/Dublin Scioto), a week after qualifying for Nationals in the 5,000 meter run, led three Edinboro runners in the 10,000 meters, finishing in third place with an NCAA-qualifying time of 31:02.39. Senior Jeff Barker (Barto, PA/Boyertown) was Edinboro's top finisher in the 5,000 meters, placing 18th with an NCAA-qualifying time of 14:32.23.
Several other Fighting Scots turned in strong performances at the Relays. Freshman Tim Cron (Sayre, PA/Sayre), finished in 12th place in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:57.81, 3.8 seconds behind the leader. John Flynn ran a time of 4:09.35 to finish in 51st place. Cron and Flynn also competed in the 800 meter run, with Cron placing 68th (1:59.02) and Flynn placing 102nd (2:07.09). Joe Janke finished in 84th with a time of 2:00.44.
Sophomore Nate Wibberly (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing), competing in the 10,000-meter run, finished in 6th place with a time of 31:28.17, just two seconds off the National qualifying pace. Sophomore Ryan Kelly (Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach) finished with a time of 33:27.79, good for 19th place. Two-time All-American Yi Min Wu (Tian Jin, China) placed 31st in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:48.79.
Junior Carrie McKeon (Altoona, PA/Altoona) led three other Edinboro runners in cracking the top twenty in the 10,000 meters, finishing in 13th place with a time of 38:45.33. Sophomores Amy Shinskie (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) and Lynann Lorenz (Vestal, NY/Vestal) were 16th (39:26.57) and 19th (41:36.14) place, respectively.
Edinboro's lone competitor in the hurdles, Lindseed Schlieper placed 14th in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15:91. She also competed in the 400 meter hurdles, placing 32nd (1:11.07), and finished in 75th place in the 800 meter run (2:35.56). Sophomore Annie Lindenberger (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) placed 76th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:36.70.
Senior Meighan Gast (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was 18th in the shot put with a distance of 11.96 meters.
