Edinboro Opens PSAC West Football Action With 16-0 Shutout of Shippensburg
Fighting Scot Defense Post Second Shutout, Holding Red Raiders to 188 Yards
September 27, 2005

EDINBORO, PA – Edinboro University used a ten-point spurt in 66 seconds in the second quarter and a strong defensive effort to post a 16-0 shutout of Shippensburg on Saturday at Sox Harrison Stadium. The Fighting Scots, ranked 20th by the AFCA and 13th by D2Football.com, are now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in PSAC West action, while Shippensburg falls to 2-3 and 0-1, respectively.

The victory snapped a string of four straight losses to the Red Raiders, as Shippensburg had won seven of the last eight meetings. The two teams were part of a three-way tie for first place in the PSAC West a year ago.

The defenses dominated play most of the afternoon, with Edinboro finishing the afternoon with 250 total yards and Shippensburg 188. The Red Raiders gained 67 of those yards on their final drive in the last two minutes against reserves. Edinboro came into the contest ranked sixth in total defense (214.0 ypg.) and was third in rushing defense (48.0 ypg.). Shippensburg, a team that has given Edinboro fits on the ground in years passed, barely exceeded that with 68 yards rushing.

In addition to the yardage total, Edinboro came up with a pair of fumbles and an interception, and the Fighting Scot special teams blocked a field goal and a punt.

Shippensburg had the only scoring opportunity in the first quarter, but Jamie Reder’s 23-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Greg MacAnn (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena). The game remained scoreless until Edinboro put together a 12-play, 64-yard march in the second quarter that ended with Kody Robertson (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) kicking a 34-yard field goal with 5:06 to play. Kelvin Collins’ (Glen Burnie, MD/Old Mill) 29-yard run on a 3rd-and-2 moved the ball to the Ship 28. Later in the drive Justin Bouch (Brackenridge, PA/Highlands) completed a 14-yard pass to Jeff Dinger (Conneaut, OH/Conneaut) to the Ship 14.

Following the ensuing kickoff, Scot ILB Dave Jazenski (Erie, PA/Iroquois) forced a fumble, with Tom Davidson (Geneva, OH/Geneva) recovering at the two. A pair of Ulysee Davis (Bryan’s Road, MD/Bishop McNamara) runs, the second from a yard out, gave Edinboro a 10-0 lead with exactly four minutes to play. In 66 seconds the Fighting Scots had put ten points on the scoreboard, with Davis scoring his seventh touchdown of the year.

The Edinboro defense got the ball on the next series, as Davidson intercepted a Tony Gomez pass and returned it 43 yards to the Ship 24. The Scots would get down to the two as Collins carried for seven yards and Davis had runs of eight and seven yards, but the Shippensburg defense stiffened. Robertson came in and kicked his second field goal, a 19-yarder with two seconds left in the half.

Edinboro scored the lone points of the second half on Robertson’s third field goal of the game with 8:49 remaining. The 29-yard field goal marked the third time the junior had kicked three field goals in a game, and moved him into fourth place in career field goals with 22.

The scoring drive started when Edinboro moved to the Ship 18. On 3rd-and-10, Bouch was intercepted by John Sharbough at the 15, but after an 18-yard return Sharbough fumbled and the Scots recovered. Collins followed with three straight runs to the 16, and three plays later Robertson made it 16-0.

A number of defensive players stood out for the Scots, as Edinboro recorded its second shutout of the year and has now given up just 30 points. The last time an Edinboro team had two shutouts in a season was 1980. Ben Stroup (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) led the team with 10 tackles. A.J. Cousins (Chillicothe, OH/Chillicothe), a junior noseguard, had 7 tackles and a pair of sacks. MacAnn had 6 tackles, three for losses, a sack, and the blocked field goal. Jim Soltis (Garrettsville, OH/Cardinal) also had 6 tackles, with one for a loss and a blocked punt. Davidson had the interception and fumble recovery.

Davis paced the offense with 77 yards rushing on 22 carries. Collins, a 6’0”, 230 lb. senior, bulled his way for 71 yards on 12 carries off the bench, as Edinboro ended the day with 169 yards rushing. In addition to kicking three field goals, Robertson averaged 38.2 yards on six punts, with two inside the twenty.

Edinboro is back in action on Saturday, October 1, hosting Clarion. The Fighting Scots will celebrate Homecoming with a special kickoff time of 2:00 p.m.
