Official Press Release

Edinboro Opens Football Season With Impressive 47-0 Win Over WVU-Tech
Davis Scores Three Touchdowns in First Career Game
September 27, 2005

EDINBORO, PA – It was a day of firsts for the Edinboro football team as the Fighting Scots kicked off the 2005 campaign with a 47-0 win over WVU Tech. The win was the first season-opening victory for the Fighting Scots since 2002, and the shutout was the first since a 44-0 triumph at Cheyney in 1997.

Edinboro entered the contest nationally-ranked in every NCAA Division II preseason poll, including tied for 14th in the AFCA poll and sixth according to Sports Illustrated. The going figures to get much tougher this coming week, when Edinboro plays at East Stroudsburg, a 72-17 winner over Bentley last night and ranked ninth by the AFCA.

Turnovers proved the major difference in the contest. WVU Tech committed six turnovers, five on interceptions, while Edinboro was not guilty of a turnover. Six of Edinboro’s eight scores came after Golden Bear miscues.

Edinboro unveiled Ulysee Davis (Bryan’s Road, MD/Bishop McNamara) as the new starting tailback, and the 5’9”, 193 lb. redshirt freshman debuted with 132 yards on 19 carries, with 3 TDs. Spud, as he is commonly known, scored a pair of touchdowns in a two-minute span of the first quarter as Edinboro jumped to a quick 14-0 lead. WVU Tech took the opening kickoff and drove to the Edinboro 41 before Chris Amico (Webster, NY/West Irondequoit) recovered a fumble at the EU 45. The Golden Bears would venture into Edinboro territory just one more time.

In a 5-play, 55-yard drive that featured Davis carrying on every down, he scored his first career touchdown on a one-yard plunge . With two penalties pushing the Fighting Scost back, he actually gained 65 yards on the five rushes. That included a 32-yard burst down to the one.

The Scots were back in business moments later when Chris Avery (Berea, OH/Berea) came up with the first of his three interceptions on the day off freshman quarterback Joey Jude. After an incomplete pass by Justin Bouch (Brackenridge, PA/Highlands), Davis carried three straight times, capping the short 23-yard drive with a 12-yard scoring run. Kody Robertson’s (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) extra point made it 14-0 at the 7:38 mark.

Robertson would conclude the first quarter with a 26-yard field goal at the 1:45 mark to make it 17-0. The score came following another Avery pickoff, giving Edinboro the ball at the WVU Tech 36.

Edinboro scored twice in the final 2:20 of the second quarter to boost the halftime lead to 31-0, with both scores set up by interceptions. Junior FS Damion Malott (Akron, OH/Akron North), playing in his first game as a Fighting Scot, intercepted a Jude aerial at the WVT 46. The Scots drove 46 yards on seven plays, with Bouch converting on a pair of third-down plays. The senior hit Jeff Dinger (Conneaut, OH/Conneaut) for a 12-yard gain on 3rd and 10, and later hit Jordan Bobitski

(Pittsburgh, PA/Carrick) for a five-yard gain down to the WVT 23 on 3rd and 4. Davis went 23 yards on the next play for his third touchdown of the afternoon.

On the Golden Bears second play from scrimmage following the kickoff, Avery came up with his third interception of the half, returning it 43 yards to the WVT 12. With 46 seconds remaining in the half, Bouch connected with Dinger in the right corner of the end zone for a seven-yard TD pass.

Edinboro tacked on a pair of scores in the third quarter, in addition to Robertson missing a 37-yard field goal. Following a Golden Bear punt, Edinboro took over at the WVT 49, and drove down to the nine before settling for a 27-yard field goal by Robertson. That gave Robertson 19 career field goals, moving into fifth place.

Jude’s fifth interception of the day set up Edinboro’s other score. Senior CB Jermaine Truax (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) returning a pickoff nine yards to the WVT 38. Third string TB Kelvin Collins (Glen Burnie, MD/Old Mill) did the dirty work, carrying four times for 29 yards down to the nine. On second and goal, backup QB Josh Hinkle (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) hit senior TE C.J. Trivisonno (Kirtland, OH/Kirtland) on a nine-yard scoring pass, his first career TD toss.

Edinboro tacked on a final score midway through the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by backup TB DeMarkus Robinson (Orrville, OH./Orrville). It capped a 42-yard drive, and included a 31-yard run by the transfer from Kent State. Avery, Edinboro’s backup kicker, came in and booted the extra point.

The Fighting Scots finished the afternoon with 464 yards compared to just 94 yards for the Golden Bears. Edinboro held a huge 38:14 to 21:46 advantage in time of possession. After limiting WVU Tech to minus seven yards rushing a year ago, the Golden Bears managed just 15 yards on 19 rushes.

In addition to Davis, Robinson totaled 90 yards on 14 carries and Collins, a transfer from Bowie State, had 66 yards on 11 rushes. Bouch was 7 of 13 for 102 yards and 1 TD, with Hinkle completing 7 of 14 passes for 59 yards. Bobitski had 3 catches for 12 yards, with all going for first downs.

Jude completed 7 of 24 passes fot 74 yards and 5 INTs, with Jermaine Jack rushing for eight yards and catching 3 passes for 15 yards to pace the Golden Bears. Edinboro came up with a pair of sacks.

BORO NOTES: Avery moved into sole possession of second place in career interceptions with 16. He needs three more interceptions to tie Steve Russell. He also kicked his first career extra point.
