EDINBORO, PA The string of
heart-breaking defeats continued for the Edinboro womens
soccer team on Tuesday, as local rival Mercyhurst scored a late
goal to hand the Fighting Scots a 2-1 setback. Edinboro is now
0-3-1 in its last four matches, previously losing 1-0 to Gannon,
tying Slippery Rock, 0-0 in two overtimes, and suffering a 2-1
double overtime loss at Indiana(Pa.), with the winning goal scored
in the final minute.
Edinboro falls to 4-5-2 overall with the loss.
The Fighting Scots entered the match ranked sixth in the Northeast
Region. Mercyhurst, the ninth-ranked team in the Great Lakes
Region, improves to 7-2-0. The Lakers also remained perfect
against the Fighting Scots, with six wins and a pair of ties in

It appeared Edinboro was headed for its third
straight overtime match, but Mercyhursts high-scoring duo of
Sarah Powell and Lisa Casement decided matters in regulation. The
two had hounded Edinboro goalkeeper Trish Chilcott (Erie,
PA/Harbor Creek) all day, with Powell beating Chilcott for the
games initial goal at 21:00 for her 10th goal of the season.
This time it was Casement doing the honors,
taking a pass from Powell and hitting the left corner of the net
from ten yards out for the game-winning goal at 87:03. It was
Casements eighth goal.
Edinboro tied the match early in the second
half as Elise Falatach (Bay Village, OH/Bay) notched her
second goal of the season, with the assist going to Angie de
Almeida (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland).
Mercyhurst held a wide edge in shots, 20-8,
with Chilcott recording six saves. Lakers goalkeeper Karen
Eade had three saves.
