EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
defense celebrated Homecoming in impressive fashion, posting its
second straight shutout and third of the season as the Fighting
Scots defeated Clarion, 44-0. Edinboro, ranked 21st in the AFCA
Top 25 and 11th in the D2Football.com poll, has now won three
straight games and improves to 4-1 overall. At 2-0 in PSAC West
action, it marks the first time Edinboro has won its first two
games in league play since 1996. Clarion falls to 2-3 overall and
0-2 in the PSAC West. The three shutouts is the most since the
1975 team shut out three opponents.
Edinboro entered the contest leading Division
II in rushing defense while ranked third in scoring defense and
fourth in total defense and turnover margin. The Fighting Scots
did nothing to diminish those figures, limiting Clarion to 38
total yards and minus eight yards rushing. The Golden Eagles were
also lost a pair of fumbles while Edinboro did not commit a
turnover. The total yards figure ranks sixth all-time by an
Edinboro defense, while the rushing yards stands eighth. So
dominant was the performance that the Golden Eagles did not record
their initial first down until the 4:07 mark of the third quarter,
and finished with just three first downs.
The Edinboro offense, meanwhile, churned out a
season high 561 total yards while rushing for 283 yards. A total
of six different players scored touchdowns, with four of Edinboros
scoring drives going 80 yards-or-more. Despite the lopsided final
score, Edinboro did not reach the end zone for the first time
until the final play of the first quarter, as Justin Bouch
(Brackenridge, PA/Highlands) completed a 14-yard pass to Kyle
Witucki (Tarentum, PA/Highlands). The play came on a 4th-and-4
and capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive. Ulysee Davis (Bryans
Road, MD/Bishop McNamara) accounted was the workhorse in the
drive with nine carries for 39 yards, but Bouch completed three
passes for 41 yards.
A Clarion turnover led to the next Edinboro
score. Seth Fragale (Emporium, PA/Cameron County) forced a
fumble and recovered it at the Clarion 11. The Scots needed four
plays to reach paydirt, with Kelvin Collins (Glen Burnie,
MD/Old Mills) scoring his first career touchdown as a Fighting
Scot on a one-yard run with 9:00 left in the second quarter. The
extra point was blocked by James Charles.
Edinboro tacked on a pair of scores in the
final two-and-a-half-minutes to boost the lead to 23-0 at the
half. After a three-and-out for Clarion, the Scots drove 54 yards
on nine plays, using up 5 minutes and 4 seconds, with backup
quarterback Josh Hinkle (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central
Catholic) running the offense. The sophomore was a perfect
five-for-five in the drive for 67 yards, the final completion
covering seven yards to Jeff Dinger (Conneaut, OH/Conneaut)
for six points with 2:11 left in the half. Earlier in the drive
the Scots converted on 3rd-and-16 as Hinkle hooked up with Aaron
Fetty (Franklin, PA/Franklin) for a 23-yard gain to the Clarion
37. Fetty entered the game with three catches for 28 yards, but
had two catches for 40 yards in the scoring drive. He would end
the day with 3 receptions for 54 yards.
Another three-and-out for the Golden Eagles
gave Edinboro the ball back at the EU 44 with 1:25 to play. With
Bouch hitting C.J. Trivisonno (Kirtland, OH/Kirtland) for
a 25-yard gain, and Davis bursting 19 yards, the Scots advanced to
the Clarion three before Kody Robertson (Columbus, OH/Hilliard
Davidson) came in and booted a 20-yard field game with 23
seconds left. Edinboro actually had one more opportunity after
recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but Robertsons
48-yard field goal was no good.
Edinboro added a pair of 80-yard drives in the
third quarter and went 85-yards in the fourth. The scots needed
just four plays to start the second half to cover the distance,
with Bouch completing three of three passes for 79
yards. The last was a 12-yard TD toss to Jordan
Bobitski (Pittsburgh, PA/Carrick). Later in the period Bouch
drove the Scots 80 yards in six plays. The first four plays were
runs by Collins covering a total of 32 yards. Bouch ended the
drive with a 43-yard TD pass to Ryan Valasek (Natrona Heights,
PA/Highlands) for a 37-0 lead with 4:22 left in the quarter.
Hinkle directed the final scoring drive,
connecting with backup tight end Joe Gable (Conneaut,
OH/Conneaut) on a 5-yard TD pass. The drive covered 85 yards,
12 plays, and ate up 6 minutes and 17 seconds. DeMarkus
Robinson (Orrville, OH/Orrville) did most of the damage with
seven rushes for 33 yards.
After a slow start, Bouch ended the afternoon
completing 8 of 22 passes, but for 188 yards with 3 TDs, the sixth
time in his career the senior has thrown at least three TD passes.
Hinkle completed all seven of his attempts for 90 yards, as the
Scots finished with a season-high 278 yards through the air.
Valasek had 3 catches for 84 yards, with eight players catching at
least one pass.
Davis posted his third 100-yard game of the
season. The redshirt freshman gained a season-high 147 yards on 22
carries despite sitting out much of the second half. Collins added
67 yards on 10 carries and Robinson had 11 carries for 44 yards.
The defense, meanwhile, registered a
season-high 6 sacks from eight different players. Jim Soltis
(Garrettsville, OH/Cardinal) paced the defensive effort with 9
tackles, while Dave Jazenski (Erie, PA/Iroquois) adding 7
hits. Greg MacAnn (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) had 6
tackles, with 2 ½ for losses.
Tyrone Buckner paced Clarion with 19 yards
rushing on six carries. Brandon Dando completed 4 of 9 passes for
40 yards.
Edinboro faces a staunch test next weekend,
playing at California(Pa.) on Saturday, October 8. Kickoff is set
for 3 p.m., with the Vulcans celebrating Homecoming.
