EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens soccer team picked up its second shutout of the
season over Lock Haven, and in the process moved closer to
securing a PSAC Playoff berth. Angie de Almeida (Gibsonia,
PA/Pine-Richland) accounted for both goals in Edinboros
2-0 win.
The victory boosts the Fighting Scots to 7-6-2
overall, but more importantly, 5-2-1 in the PSAC West. Edinboro
moves ahead of Slippery Rock into second place with 16 points. One
more Edinboro win or a California(Pa.) loss will clinch one of the
three playoff spots in the West. Lock Haven falls to 5-11-0 and
2-6-0 in the PSAC West.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first
half despite Lock Haven holding a 7-3 advantage in shots. Edinboro
finally broke the tie at 72:45 when de Almeida scored unassisted
off a shot from 25 yards out following a Lady Eagle turnover.
The sophomore added an insurance goal with
exactly two minutes remaining in the match when Edinboro broke up
the left side, with Elise Falatach (Bay Village, OH/Bay)
feeding Jessica Lassen (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg), who fed
de Almeida. de Almeida eluded the goalie and scored from inside
ten yards out for the clinching goal. de Almeida now has a
team-leading 7 goals and 5 assists.
Lock Haven held a 13-11 advantage in shots,
with Fighting Scot goalkeeper Trish Chilcott (Erie, PA/Harbor
Creek) coming up with 6 saves for her fifth shutout of the
season. She needs one more shutout to set the school record.
Edinboro returns to action on Sunday, October
16, playing at East Stroudsburg.
