EDINBORO, PA Justin Bouch
(Brackenridge, PA/Highlands) threw a pair of touchdown passes
to Kyle Witucki (Tarentum, PA/Highlands) and Edinboro
blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown for the third
straight week, propelling the Fighting Scots to a 33-7 win over
Kutztown. Edinboro has won three straight games to move to 7-2
overall, while the Golden Bears fall to 1-8.
Edinboro entered the contest ranked seventh in
the Northeast region. The victory, coupled with Bryants
27-14 win over Bentley, kept the Fighting Scots playoff
hopes alive. Bentley was ranked sixth in the region and concluded
its season today.
Bouch three both of his touchdowns in the
second quarter as Edinboro snapped a scoreless tie after one
period with 20 second-quarter markers. The first score was set up
by a 29-yard punt return by Deonte Peters (Cleveland Heights,
OH/Cleveland Heights), giving Edinboro the ball at the EU 43.
With Kelvin Collins (Glen Burnie, MD/Old Mill) doing most
of the damage, the Scots drove 57 yards in 11 plays. Bouch hooked
up with Witucki on a one-yard scoring pass at the 11:47 mark. Kody
Robertsons (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) extra point
made it 7-0. Collins carried seven times for 37 yards on the
drive.
The defense accounted for the next score, as
Edinboro forced a three-and-out on the ensuing series. Ryan Nyes
punt was blocked by Tom Davidson (Geneva, OH/Geneva), with
Damion Malott (Akron, OH/Akron North) recovering in the
end zone for a touchdown. It marked the third straight week that
Edinboro had blocked a punt and recovered in the end zone for six
points. Robertsons extra point was no good with 10:10 to
play.
Bouch and Witucki combined for their second
touchdown with 2:35 to play in the period, capping a seven-play,
77-yard drive. Ulysee Davis (Bryans Road, MD/Bishop
McNamara) actually scored on the play before from 26 yards
out, but a holding penalty at the two yard line negated the score
and pushed the ball back to the 12. Bouch then hit Witucki on the
next play, giving him 52 career touchdown passes, second in the
career records. Earlier in the game the senior quarterback broke
the school record for career attempts. He now has 932.
Kutztown put together a quick drive late in the
half to close the gap to 20-7 at intermission. Facing a 3rd-and-13
play at their own 17, the Golden Bears got a 19-yard run from
Maurice Adams for a first down. Freshman quarterback Shane Martin
completed a pair of 27-yard passes to Brent Howard, moving the
ball to the EU 10. the Golden Bears eventually scored on
4th-and-goal, as Martin hit Brett Harbach for a six-yard scoring
pass.
Edinboro had an opportunity to break the
contest open in the third quarter, as the Scots blocked another
punt on the first series, then recovering a fumble on the next.
Despite taking over at the Kutztown 20 and 23, respectively,
Edinboro was forced to settle for a pair of 21-yard field goals
from Robertson.
Edinboro led 26-7 after three quarters. The
junior placekicker now has 26 career field goals, tying him for
third all-time.
Edinboros last score came courtesy of
Davis, who burst up the middle 14 yards for a touchdown with 8:50
to play.
The Fighting Scots entered the game with one of
the top defenses in Division II, and turned in another impressive
outing. Kutztown finished with just 198 total yards, with 71 of
those yards coming in the final drive against mainly reserves. For
the second week in a row the Scots recorded 9 sacks, tied for the
second-highest total in school history. Chris Amico (Webster,
NY/West Irondequoit) led the way with 2.5 sacks, with A.J.
Cousins (Chillicothe, OH/Chillicothe) adding 1.5 sacks. Ben
Stroup (Columbus, OH/ Hilliard Davidson) had a team-high 9
tackles, with a pair for losses.
Edinboro finished with 340 total yards,
including 201 on the ground. Collins gained 96 yards on 20
carries, with Davis adding 56 yards on six carries. In his final
regular season home appearance, Bouch completed 13 of 24 passes
for 130 yards with 2 TDs and 0 INTs.
Robertson attempted a third field goal early in
the fourth quarter, but his 22-yard attempt was blocked by Michael
Baldwin.
Edinboro concludes the regular season next
Saturday, November 5 at Lock Haven. Kickoff is slated for 1:00
p.m. A win over the Bald Eagles would give Edinboro its third
straight PSAC West championship.
