SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – Meghan McGrath scored a pair of goals to lead Slippery Rock to a 4-1 win over Edinboro on Tuesday in the first round of the PSAC Women’s Soccer Playoffs. The Rock, 11-5-3, now moves on to play at Indiana(Pa.) on Friday, November 4 in the semifinals. Edinboro’s season ends with a 7-9-3 record.

In two previous meetings the teams had battled to a pair of 0-0 ties in double overtime. Playing in a steady rain, Edinboro ended the stretch of almost 225 minutes without a goal by the two teams as Mary Grebenc (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) scored an unassisted gaol just 4:28 into the match. It was the sophomore’s first goal of the season.

Unfortunately, the Fighting Scots would fail to dent the net again, while The Rock would run off four unanswered goals. Slippery Rock tied the match at 26:02 on McGrath’s first goal, also unassisted. The score was 1-1 at the half.

Slippery Rock grabbed the lead just 61 seconds into the second half on McGrath’s second goal, assisted by Danielle Cooper. The rock would score two more insurance goals in a span of five minutes later in the match. Julie Kirwan made it 3-1, assisted by Martina Hall, at 73:25. Hall accounted for the final goal off a pass from Cheryl Wickerham at 78:14.

Slippery Rock held a 20-12 advantage in shots. Jen McCormick registered 7 saves in goal for SRU, while Trish Chilcott (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) also had 7 saves for the Boro. In Saturday’s 0-0 tie with Slippery Rock, Chilcott recorded her school-record sixth shutout.

Edinboro celebrated its tenth season of women’s soccer with its third appearance in the PSAC Playoffs. The Fighting Scots had been shut out by Bloomsburg and Millersville in their previous two appearances.
