SLIPPERY ROCK, PA Meghan McGrath scored
a pair of goals to lead Slippery Rock to a 4-1 win over Edinboro
on Tuesday in the first round of the PSAC Womens Soccer
Playoffs. The Rock, 11-5-3, now moves on to play at Indiana(Pa.)
on Friday, November 4 in the semifinals. Edinboros season
ends with a 7-9-3 record.
In two previous meetings the teams had battled
to a pair of 0-0 ties in double overtime. Playing in a steady
rain, Edinboro ended the stretch of almost 225 minutes without a
goal by the two teams as Mary Grebenc (Strongsville,
OH/Strongsville) scored an unassisted gaol just 4:28 into the
match. It was the sophomores first goal of the season.
Unfortunately, the Fighting Scots would fail to
dent the net again, while The Rock would run off four unanswered
goals. Slippery Rock tied the match at 26:02 on McGraths
first goal, also unassisted. The score was 1-1 at the half.
Slippery Rock grabbed the lead just 61 seconds
into the second half on McGraths second goal, assisted by
Danielle Cooper. The rock would score two more insurance goals in
a span of five minutes later in the match. Julie Kirwan made it
3-1, assisted by Martina Hall, at 73:25. Hall accounted for the
final goal off a pass from Cheryl Wickerham at 78:14.
Slippery Rock held a 20-12 advantage in shots.
Jen McCormick registered 7 saves in goal for SRU, while Trish
Chilcott (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) also had 7 saves for the
Boro. In Saturdays 0-0 tie with Slippery Rock, Chilcott
recorded her school-record sixth shutout.
Edinboro celebrated its tenth season of womens
soccer with its third appearance in the PSAC Playoffs. The
Fighting Scots had been shut out by Bloomsburg and Millersville in
their previous two appearances.
