EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday in the PSAC
Championships, defeating Millersville, 30-32, 30-27, 30-22, 30-27,
in the quarterfinals before suffering a 30-15, 30-22, 30-25 loss
to Lock Haven in the semifinals. Kutztown is hosting the event.
The Fighting Scots, under first-year coach
Missy Soboleski, now have a 25-15 record. Despite the semifinal
defeat, Edinboro is expected to receive a bid to the NCAA Division
II Atlantic Regional set for next weekend. Edinboro was ranked
third in the region, with the top eight teams headed to the
regional.
Edinboro, the number three seed out of the PSAC
West, rallied after losing the first game against Millersville to
beat the Marauders for the second time this year. Jenna Newman
(Reno, NV/ Coronado) led the way with 16 kills along with 5
service aces. Alicia Knouff (Louisville, OH/ Louisville)
added 15 kills, 3 service aces and 4 total blocks. Ashley
Cottengim (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 13 kills and 44 assists,
along with 14 digs, while Amy Tausch (Silver Lake, OH/Walsh
Jesuit) posted 12 kills. Michele Bator (West Middlesex,
PA/West Middlesex) paced the Scots in digs with 16, and Amelia
Robinson (Amherst, OH/Marion L. Steele) had 12 digs and 5
service aces. Tiffany Trgovac (Irvine, CA/Irvine) totaled
12 digs and 9 kills.
Lock Haven won all ten of its PSAC West matches
this season to earn the number one seed. The Lady Eagles are
ranked 17th in the AVCA Top 25, and improved to 30-4 with the
three-game win. It marked the third time this season Edinboro has
lost to Lock Haven in three games.
Newman paced the Fighting Scots with 9 kills
and 3 block assists. Knouff added 8 kills, with Breanna Smith
(North Canton, OH/North Canton Hoover) adding 7 kills. Bator
totaled 17 digs.
With 23 kills in the two matches, Knouff a 61
senior middle hitter, now has 483 kills, good for third in the
season records. Bator, meanwhile, now has 463 digs, also good for
third in a season.
