EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University mens
basketball team used a dominating performance on the glass and
double double efforts by Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/
Montour/Penn State) and Justin Moore (Canonsburg,
PA/Canon-McMillan/New Haven) in turning in an 89-56 win over
West Virginia Wesleyan in the season opener for both teams on
Tuesday.
The Fighting Scots controlled the boards to the
tune of 56-24, actually pulling down one more offensive rebounds
than West Virginia Wesleyans rebound total. Tielsch, a 68,
240 lb. senior, scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down 11
rebounds. Moore, a 66 sophomore who played at New
Haven a year ago, added 13 points and 11 boards. Curtis Ingram
(Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney/Wofford), a 63
junior who is also a transfer by way of Wofford, fell one rebound
shy of a double double with 12 points and 9 boards.
A fast-paced first half saw Edinboro jump out
to a 46-23 lead at intermission, holding the Bobcats to 31.0
percent shooting from the floor. The Fighting Scots used an 8-0
run to go from a 9-8 lead to 17-8, with Tielsch capping the run
with a dunk. A 9-0 later in the half built the margin to 38-18.
The lead never got under 24 points in the second half.
The sophomore tandem of Devon Knight
(Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) and Ryan McLemore (Garfield
Heights, OH/St. Peter Chanel) played a large role off the
bench. Knight contributed 10 points, while McLemore, a rangy 68
forward, had 9 points, 7 rebounds and a career-high 8 blocked
shots in 22 minutes.
Edinboro shot 49.3 percent from the floor on
the evening while holding the Bobcats to 36.7 percent. The only
negative for the Scots was 16 turnovers, 11 in the second half.
The victory marked the third straight season Edinboro opened the
season with a win over West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Fighting Scots return to action on Tuesday,
November 22 playing at backyard rival Gannon. Tipoff is slated for
8:00 p.m.
