EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University mens
and womens basketball teams swept the initial PSAC Player of
the Week awards. Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour)
was named the PSAC West Mens Player of the Week, while Callie
Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) was recognized as the Womens
Player of the Week.
Tielsch is a 68, 240 lb. senior who
led Edinboro to a convincing 89-56 victory over West Virginia
Wesleyan in its season opener. He made 9 of 10 field goals and 5
of 7 free throws for a game-high 23 points, adding 11 rebounds
while playing 23 minutes.
Iorfido helped the Fighting Scots womens
team get off to a 2-0 start while playing in the Golden Bear
Classic, averaging 18.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg., with 23 assists and just
6 turnovers. The 55 senior opened the year with 13
points in a 97-65 win over Alderson-Broaddus. More importantly,
she handed out 15 assists and did not commit a turnover. The 15
assists is one shy of the school record of 16 she holds along with
Andrea Martre. Iorfido made 6 of 12 field goals and her only free
throw attempt.
She followed that up with a career-high 23
points (7 of 11 FGs, 1 of 1 3s, 8 of 10 FTs) to pace the
Scots to a 72-57 win over Davis & Elkins. Iorfido handed out 8
assists and had a pair of steals. She now has 466 career assists,
good for third place all-time and 35 shy of breaking Pam Artmans
career record of 500.
The mens basketball team returns to
action this evening, playing at Gannon in an 8 p.m. tipoff. The
womens team does not play until Wednesday, November 30,
hosting Seton Hill at 7p.m.
