EDINBORO, PA Seniors Chris Ravello
(Odenton, MD/Archbishop Spalding) and Daren Tielsch
(McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) combined for 41 points to lead
Edinboro to a 78-69 win at Gannon on Tuesday night. The Fighting
Scots are now 2-0 heading into a Saturday, November 26 encounter
with Penn State McKeesport. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is
scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
The win for Edinboro was the first at Gannons
Hammermill Center since 1997-98. Edinboro has now won two straight
against their local rivals for the first time since the 1992-93
season.
Tielsch keyed the Fighting Scots to a 44-30
lead at the half, as the 68 forward scored 14 of his
20 points prior to intermission. With Tielsch saddled with four
fouls, Ravello, a 63 guard, stepped up in the second
to drop in 15 of his game-high 21 points, one shy of his career
high.
After falling behind 5-0 at the start of the
contest, Edinboro took the lead for good at 11-8 on a Ravello
three-pointer with 13:43 to play in the first half. That started a
9-0 run to give the Fighting Scots a 17-9 lead. Gannon closed to
seven at 28-21, but a 14-3 run, fueled by five points apiece from
Devon Knight (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) and Curtis
Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney), gave Edinboro a 42-24
advantage with 3:30 left in the half.
The Fighting Scots boosted the lead to 18 in
the second half at 53-35, but with several interior players
battling foul troubles, Edinboro had to survive some anxious
moments in the second half. Gannon would close to seven on several
occasions, but the Scots went 6-for-6 from the free throw line
over the final two minutes to hold off the Golden Knights.
Ravello made 4 of 8 three-pointers and was a
perfect 5 of 5 from the line. Tielsch played just 25 minutes due
to the foul problems, but made 7 of 9 field goals and 5 of 6 free
throws, adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Knight, a 59
sophomore, turned in a brilliant performance off the bench with 13
points and 5 steals, while Ingram, a 63 guard,
finished with 12 points.
While not showing up in the statistics, Joe
Cephas (Jeannette, PA/Penn Hills) provided valuable minutes in
the post. The 65 senior played nine minutes, with a
rebound and a pair of assists, plus outstanding interior defense.
Edinboro shot 53.3 percent from the floor in
the first half, and while cooling off to 39.3 percent in the
second half, still finished at 46.6 percent. The Golden Knights
were limited to 40.7 percent from the floor. A rugged rebounding
war some Gannon come away with a slight 37-35 advantage.
