EDINBORO, PA Lake Erie Colleges
nickname is The Storm, and on Tuesday the mens basketball
team blew into McComb Fieldhouse and handed the Fighting Scots a
66-62 upset. Both teams are now 3-1. Edinboro had won the first
nine meetings between the two schools, and had not lost to an NCAA
Division III team since a 72-57 setback to Wooster in 2001-02.
Edinboro trailed the entire second half before
pulling within two points in the final seconds, completing a 9-2
run. Chris Ravello (Odenton, MD/Archbishop Spalding) made
a three-pointer with 21 seconds left to pull the Fighting Scots to
within 64-62. The trifecta snapped a string of 19 straight misses
from beyond the arc. Edinboro forced a Lake Erie turnover, and
with 6.1 seconds remaining Dan Grabill (Edinboro, PA/General
McLane) went to the line to shoot two. The senior guard missed
the first attempt, then misfired intentionally, but Lake Eries
Jajcen Harris was fouled on the rebound. He made both attempts for
the final margin.
Edinboro was never able to overcome a dismal 7
of 28 performance from the field in the first half. After leading
by an average of 18 points in the first half of their first three
games, the Fighting Scots found themselves trailing 35-29 at
intermission. It could have been much worse as the Scots weathered
a 15-2 run by The Storm and trailed by as much as 14 points in the
first half at 29-15. At one point Edinboro went over eight minutes
without scoring a basket.
The second half was almost as frigid for the
Scots, as they came out of the locker room and proceeded to miss
their first nine shots of the half. Edinboro forged a tie at 37-37
with 12:39 to play on Daren Tielschs (McKees Rocks,
PA/Montour) layup, but The Storm ran off the next eight points
for a 45-37 lead. They eventually built the lead up to 11 points
at 58-47 with 6:13 to play before Edinboro started its comeback.
Edinboro ended the night shooting a dismal 26.8
percent from the floor (19 of 71), after shooting 60.6 percent
from the floor in the previous game against Penn State McKeesport.
The Fighting Scots made just 2 of 22 three-pointers. Tielsch paced
the Fighting Scots with 23 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.
It was his second double-double of the season, but the 68
senior also struggled from the field, making just 6 of 17 field
goals along with 11 of 14 free throws. He was shooting 76.7
percent from the floor coming in. Tielsch paced a 56-44 rebounding
advantage, but he was the only Scot to score in double figures.
Lake Erie featured three players in double
digits, led by Reggie Richardson with 13 points. Chad Hunt added
12 points, including a pair of big second half three-pointers, and
Harris finished with 10 markers and a team-high 7 rebounds. The
Storm shot 36.5 percent from the floor.
Edinboro will return to action on Saturday,
December 3, hosting Mansfield in a 3:00 p.m. tipoff. The following
day, Sunday, December 4, finds East Stroudsburg visiting McComb
Fieldhouse for another 3:00 p.m. contest.
