Football Standouts Avery, Collins Join Men’s Basketball Team
December 2, 2005

EDINBORO, PA – A pair of Edinboro University football players will now try their hands at basketball. Chris Avery (Berea, OH/Berea) and Kelvin Collins (Glen Burnie, MD/Old Mill) have been added to the men’s basketball roster and will be in uniform for the Saturday, December 3 game against Mansfield.

Avery, a 5’10”, 173 lb. senior, was a four-year starter at cornerback who will now play guard. He is actually now a three-sport athlete at Edinboro after competing in track & field a year ago. He recently broke Edinboro’s career record for interceptions with 20. This past season, he led Edinboro with 7 interceptions for a school-record 196 yards, tying for the PSAC lead in interceptions and ranking 11th in Division II. He returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown against California(Pa.), the second-longest return in school history. A week later he blocked a punt at Indiana (Pa.) and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Avery is a three-time All-PSAC West choice, including first team this year, and was also a first team Daktronics All-Northeast Region choice.

Collins took over as Edinboro’s starting tailback late in the fall. A bruising 6’1”, 230 lbs. senior, he ended up earning second team All-PSAC West accolades despite starting just three games. A transfer from Bowie State in his lone season as a Fighting Scot, Collins battled injuries early in the year and was not really used consistently until the fourth game. He finished as Edinboro’s leading rusher with 791 yards on 149 carries, a 5.3 yard average, with 6 TDs, adding 3 receptions for 12 yards. Over the last five games he averaged 102.2 yards per game. Collins had a career-high 133 yards on 25 carries against Slippery Rock, and gained 118 yards on 21 carries with 2 TDs at Lock Haven.

Collins will wear number 24 and serve as a guard/forward, while Avery will number 10.
