EDINBORO, PA One day after falling
behind by double digits in the opening minutes of the Mansfield
game, the Edinboro University mens basketball team used a
quick getaway to fuel a 77-69 win over East Stroudsburg. The
Fighting Scots made it a sweep of their PSAC crossover games this
weekend while improving to 5-1. East Stroudsburg, picked to finish
second in the PSAC East preseason coaches poll, fell to 4-2
while giving up more than 60 points for just the second time this
season.
With Torry Mitchell (Erie, PA/Central)
hitting a pair of three-pointers and a jumper, Edinboro scored the
first ten points of the game and held a double figures lead less
than three minutes into the game.
East Stroudsburg closed to within three twice
in the first half before Edinboro settled for a 45-38 lead at the
half. After scoring 17 points in the second half of a 67-66 win
over Mansfield, Mitchell made it back-to-back big halves with 14
points.
Edinboro would maintain its lead in the second
half in a game in which it never trailed, but the Fighting Scots
did have some anxious moments late in the game. The Warriors
closed to two points at 67-65 with 5:36 to play, but the Scots ran
off the next seven points as Ryan McLemore (Garfield Heights,
OH/St. Peter Chanel) scored on a layup, followed by a jumper
in the lane by Mitchell, and a layup and free throw by Devon
Knight (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills).
Mitchell, a 510 senior, led four
Scots in double figures with a season-high 20 points. Daren
Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) posted his third straight
double-double and fourth of the season with 18 points and 13
rebounds. Knight, a 59 sophomore who made his first
career start, added a season-high 14 points. Justin Moore
(Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) rounded out the double figure
scorers with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
After shooting 51.5 percent from the floor in
the first half the Scots settled for 45.9 percent for the game.
They held East Stroudsburg to 35.4 percent. The only negative was
a 15 of 26 figure from the line (57.7 percent).
Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday,
December 7, facing their third straight opponent with only one
loss as they make the short journey up I-79 to play at Mercyhurst.
The Lakers are off to a 6-1 start. It will be a homecoming for
Mitchell, who played his first two seasons at Mercyhurst before
transferring to Edinboro. The senior guard needs three points to
reach 1,000 points for his combined time at Edinboro and
Mercyhurst, entering the game with 997 points. |
