EDINBORO, PA Three Edinboro University
football players were accorded All-American honors as three teams
were released today. All three players made the 2005 Daktronics
Division II All-America Team, with Greg Bzorek (Saxonburg,
PA/Knoch) named to the second team as an offensive tackle and
Chris Amico (R ) and Chris Avery (Berea, OH/Berea)
earning spots on the second team at defensive line and cornerback,
respectively. Bzorek and Avery were also named second team members
on D2Football.coms All-America team, while the duo was named
to the CollegeSportsReport.coms third team.
Bzorek is a 66, 330 lb. senior who
will play in the upcoming Cactus Bowl on January 6. He is also one
of eight finalists for the 2005 Gene Upshaw Lineman of the Year
Award, which will be announced during the Cactus Bowl festivities,
and was recently named a second team Associated Press Little
All-American. He anchored an offensive line which led the PSAC in
fewest sacks allowed (7) for the second straight year. Edinboro
also averaged 199.3 ypg. on the ground. A four-year starter who
started 44 of 45 career games, he did not give up a sack his last
two years. As a junior Bzorek was accorded numerous honors, as
well, including third team Associated Press Little All-America
recognition and third team D2Football.com All-American honors.
While small for a defensive tackle at 60,
250 lbs., Amico disrupted opposing defenses so much that he was
named the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year. He was one of
just a handful of sophomores to be recognized on the three teams.
He finished third on the team in tackles with 49, with 14.5
tackles for losses totaling 72 yards, second on the team. He led
Edinboro with 8.5 sacks, second in the PSAC. In addition, Amico
forced a pair of fumbles, with one recovery. He spearheaded an
Edinboro defense which ranked first in Division II in scoring
defense (9.3 ppg.) and rushing defense (53.7 ypg.) and was second
in total defense (211.2 ypg.).
Avery is a three-time All-PSAC selection who
ended his career breaking the school record for interceptions. He
picked off the 20th pass of his career in his final game at Lock
Haven. A 510, 173 lb. cornerback, Avery finished the
season with 7 interceptions while setting a new school record with
196 yards. That included a 99-yard return for a touchdown against
California(Pa.). He also blocked a punt at Indiana(Pa.) and
recovered it for a touchdown. He totaled 10 tackles. |
