Greg Walcavich Wins 300th Game As Men’s Basketball Coach at Edinboro
Fighting Scots Open PSAC West Action with 88-71 Win at Slippery Rock

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University men’s basketball team opened PSAC West action with an 88-71 win at Slippery Rock on Wednesday night. In the process head coach Greg Walcavich picked up his 300th win in charge of the Fighting Scots.

Walcavich is in his 17th season at Edinboro and owns a 300-169 record. Including stints at Birmingham Southern and West Virginia Wesleyan, the veteran coach has a 454-232 record in his 24th season as head coach.

Edinboro improved to 10-6 overall with its fourth straight win. The Fighting Scots have now won three straight road contests after losing four games in a row on the road, two in overtime and the other two by a total of four points.

After a slow start the Fighting Scots used a late burst in the first half to coast to the victory. Tied at 18-18 with just under eight minutes left in the first half, Edinboro went on an 11-0 run to take a 29-18 lead. The Scots would then put together a 12-2 burst to take their biggest lead of the half at 17 points (44-27) before a Slippery Rock three cut the margin to 44-30 at the half.

Slippery Rock closed to nine points on two occasions early in the second half, but another Edinboro run, this one 14-4, boosted the lead back to 19 points at 72-53. Edinboro’s lead grew to as many as 25 points before The Rock scored the final eight points of the game. The Scots went scoreless over the final 3:17.

Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the first half, making 8 of 10 field goals. He went 9 of 13 from the floor overall. A total of four Scots scored in double figures. Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) added 17 points, making 7 of 11 field goals. Chris Ravello (Odenton, MD/Archbishop Spalding) scored 15 points, making 3 of 7 three-pointers, and Torry Mitchell (Erie, PA/Central) contributed 14 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Edinboro shot 58.2 percent for the game, including a sizzling 62.5 percent in the second half.

Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, January 21, hosting California(Pa.). Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is 3:00 p.m.
