EDINBORO, PA It was only January and two
games into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference campaign,
but it certainly had the feel of a playoff game in March. The
Edinboro mens basketball team edged PSAC West preseason
favorite California(Pa.), 61-60, on Justin Moores (Canonsburg,
PA/Canonsburg-McMillan) short jumper with 6.5 seconds
remaining.
The victory gives Edinboro an 11-6 record
overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots have now won
five straight games. California(Pa.) falls to 12-5 and is 2-1 in
league play.
In a game in which the lead changed hands eight
times and the game was tied seven times, the Vulcans took a 60-59
lead when Boris Mesnager made one of two free throws with 37
seconds left. Edinboro head coach Greg Walcavich then called two
time outs, the last with eight seconds remaining. Chris
Ravello (Odenton, MD/Archbishop Spalding), inbounding the ball
from mid-court, lofted a pass over two Cal defenders into the
hands of Moore on the far side of the basket. The 66
sophomore banked the winner in from four feet out. Cals
James Petty threw up a wild shot just before the buzzer which was
no good.
Edinboro cut a 26-16 Cal lead with 6:22 to play
in the first half to 33-28 at intermission. The Fighting Scots
were fortunate to be that close with two of the teams
leading scorers, Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour)
and Torry Mitchell (Erie, PA/Central), riding the bench
for a lengthy period due to foul problems. In addition, the
Vulcans dominated the boards in the half, 22-12.
After falling behind by seven points at 37-30
early in the second half, the Scots went on a 17-5 run, with
Mitchell scoring five points and Ravello and Moore four each, to
take a 47-42 lead. The lead would expand to 57-49 with 5:32 to
play on a layup by Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal
Mooney). Tielsch picked up his fifth personal foul just over a
minute later, fueling a Cal 11-2 run that ended with Mesnagers
free throw.
Edinboro shot 42.1 percent from the floor while
holding Cal to 40.7 percent. The Vulcans came into the game
leading the PSAC at 51.3 percent. Cal won the rebounding battle,
although the Scots closed the margin to 39-33. Ingram led the
Scots in scoring with 15 points, adding a team-high 7 rebounds.
Moore finished with 12 points and 6 boards, while Ravello had 10
points. Mesnager led Cal with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and
Osborne Gardner was also in double digits with 10 points.
