EDINBORO, PA In a foul-invested contest
which featured 50 free throws and 45 fouls, the Edinboro
University womens basketball team came away with a 69-59 win
at Lock Haven on Saturday. The Fighting Scots have now won eight
of their last nine games and improve to 15-4 overall and 3-1 in
the PSAC West. Lock Haven falls to 13-5 and 2-3, respectively.
Edinboro had just 19 field goals in 56
attempts, but went 30 of 35 from the charity stripe. Kelly
Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) led the way, making 15 of 16
free throws. She fell one shy of tying the school record for free
throws made in a game, set by Jessica Rowe against California(Pa.)
in 1999-2000. Calderone finished the afternoon with a season-high
24 points while also being forced to play point guard for a good
period of time due to Callie Iorfidos (Ambridge,
PA/Ambridge) foul difficulties.
Iorfido played just 16 minutes before fouling
out. She picked up her third foul with over 13 minutes left in the
first half, and her fourth with over eight minutes remaining in
the period. The 55 senior fouled out midway through
the second half.
Maria DiVecchio (Erie, PA/Villa Maria)
and Agnes Michalow (Krakow, Poland/Krakow #32) added
double doubles for the Fighting Scots. DiVecchio had 15 points and
12 rebounds, making 9 of 10 free throws. Michalow, a 63
junior, contributed 11 points, 10 rebounds and 7 blocked shots.
Ranked as the worst rebounding team in the
PSAC, DiVecchios and Michalows work on the boards
helped Edinboro a 45-40 rebounding edge.
The Fighting Scots return to action on
